My wife just got back from Tokyo. She was born and raised there. Ya know one of her friends told her. She said they aren't allowing tattoos in onsen in Hakone. She said they were having a problem wit Yakuza. I don't know if this pertains to gaijin. I think it sucks. I love going to Hakone. Check out Nikko too. Ride the train through the valley.

You can get them at the JTB downtown SF if you want to go.
You can also get them at the Lawson a few blocks away from the Mitaka station. You'll need to input information in Japanese, though. Mitaka also has the STi museum. A short bus ride away from the station puts you right in front of the Subaru dealer.

Tsukiji is also closed on Sundays. Go to Sushi Dai for the best sushi. Expect to wait 1-2 hours.

You can always get a room with your own private rotenburo at Hakone.

There's a "Romance Train" to Hakone from Tokyo on the Odakyu line. But I think it just means you get bigger windows and a more scenic route than the JR line.

The romance train is quite nice. Less stops.

This is pretty common in most onsen even for travelers. I have quite a few visable (sleeves, shins, etc) and could not partake in the onsens.

That's been a long-time going. Onsen owners aren't gutsy enough to say "No Yakuza", so they say no tattoos and make up a dealie about how the ink seeps out in hot temperature and mucks up the water. Not so much anti-gaijin as it is anti-Yakuza

When and where was it? There ARE onsen that cater to yakuza or are otherwise lax about clientele that won't say a thing about tats.
