"Top Gear's Richard Hammond is seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the BBC programme.
The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit.

A spokesman for the hospital said Mr Hammond was "stable".

Mr Hammond had been driving a dragster-style car capable of reaching 300mph at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.



He has brought an awful lot to the programme

Former firefighter Dave Ogden, who runs private firm Event Fire Services, was one of the first people at the scene of the crash.

He said: "We were down there with Top Gear who were filming him trying to break the British land speed record.

"On the previous run, the car had just gone over 300mph but I am not sure if it had broken the record."

Thats what I like about top gear..the presenters and the crazy stunts....remember the grannies doing donuts...that one made me laugh

 

i read that earlier.... he had just hit 300+mph too...... good thing he's in stable condition

Dang That is sad to hear, hope he recovers. Yeah I liked that show. I remember the time when they had an evo keeping up with a Lambo. LOL

 

Damn, Richard Hammond is a cool *** guy... hope he gets well soon.

 

I think the Evo is in the top 8 fastest cars they've tested...or something like that. Not drag racing but on thier test track. With a pro driver behind the wheel, Evo's are friggen surgical.

 

Why would he drive the 300mph car?? Anyone who watches the show would knows that hes not the main "driver" of the bunch.. hope he gets well.

+1 on the condition updates , and yeah I love both Top Gear and Brainiac. he is a funny/cool guy.. prayers for his speedy recovery!!!

 

Haha, that's a sure indication of your age. When we're young we want to look old and then cross a certain point it's visa versa.


Back on topic, I'm surprised they didn't have this Stig do it - I mean isn't that what he's for? Hammond is a radio DJ for crying out loud... he bought the musclecar when Jeremy bought the Ford GT!

 

captain slow was suppose to drive it, but they had a conflict of dates so hammond drove it. hammond was the one that brought up the idea of having the jet car on the show. the day before the taping all three of the presenters were very excited and i believe even joked about hammond getting killed.

his condition is stable now. read that he even got up to go pee friday morning.

 

i cant wait till the new season start, i watch every top gear, its oct 8 i think
