anyone ever use tispy tow for their subaru? going out nye am thinking of using their service but i'm wondering if they'll send out a flatbed if you tell them you have awd. i can take a cab both ways but it would be cool to use their service granted the can accomodate awd.

Yes you can request a flat bed, I do it all the time. The only down side is you might have to wait longer. A regular wrecker can tow a subi, they will just need to dolly the rear wheels.

 

How often do you need a tow?!

 

Why would you do this instead of just taking a cab or BART?
It's going to cost for a hell of a lot more to tow the car

My job, either out of crashes, unlicensed drivers, or broken down vehicles.

As part of our dedication to making the roads as safe as possible for all motorists, AAA is proud to offer its Tipsy Tow program. On ten different holiday and special events in 2011, we offer a free ten-mile tow home for drinking drivers and their vehicles.
The Tipsy Tow program is open to everyone. You do not need to be an AAA Member to take advantage of this service to the community.
AAA typically offers the service to drinking drivers from 6 p.m. on the holiday to 6 a.m. the following day in Northern California, Nevada and Utah. For specific dates and times, see the list below.
During the period Tipsy Tow is available, drivers, potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders, and restaurant managers can call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a free tow home of up to ten miles. Just tell the AAA operator, "I need a Tipsy Tow," and a truck will be on its way.
The service will provide a one-way ride for the driver and vehicle to the driver's home. If there are additional passengers who need a ride, they will be taken to the driver's home as long is there is sufficient room for them to be transported safely in the tow truck. You cannot make a reservation.

It has been going on and advertised on the radio for at least a few years, I think I recall hearing it when I was still down in Monterey ('08 holiday season).

 

I guess all this is cool if you don't mind waiting forever for a tow truck. Think about how many other thrifty bastards are trying to do this too. My bet is that AAA will be overloaded and wait times will be dumb. I myself will be taking a cab home this evening, at which time I'll get in bed and chuckle at all the poor suckers waiting for Tipsy Tow.

 

i'll be at a bar that isn't close to bart at all and there aren't many cabs around either like in the city. (not to mention what a **** show bart is on nye!) from what i understand it takes 20-30 minutes, probably around the same time it would to call a cab. i'm not planning on closing the bar down (i have to be somewhere the next morning). i'll probably give them a call right after midnight. i figure i can hang at the bar with a drink or three while i wait.

 

I'd never heard of Tipsy Tow before... assumed it was a company name. That's pretty cool

I'm tempted to give it a shot tonight.
