Thumbs up Fiberglass subwoofer box (was: Tint in Santa Cruz or San Jose/ Subwoofer b0xen)

I know I could search, but I am too tired right now. :|

Can someone recommend some where to get a good tint job and how much you paid, ( specifically: wagon owners) and how many windows?
I am a cheap bastard and want to know where to get good quality, at an affordable price. =)

On a side note, has anyone here attempted to make their own fiberglass sub box in the Santa Cruz/San Jose area? I just went today and got some grey fleece, gallon of Poly. resin+MEKP hardener, 8 SQ-ft. of 1/3 Oz. chop mat, some 12oz. fiberglass, couple of paper mixer cups, measuring cup, stir sticks.
Tomorrow I am going to buy the wooden dowels, MDF board for the ring, painters tape, heavy duty foil, and sand paper.
So Far, I have spent $65 on materials, hopefully enough to make 2 boxes.
One for me, and one to sell!

If I am any good at this, I would be stoked to help others on making their own box, or maybe even making one for you if its not too time consuming.

get protective gear like gloves, GOGGLES, and long sleeve tees if you're gonna work with fiberglass. trust me, it itches like mad during & afterwards. make sure you get goggles cuz you don't want microscopic strands of fiberglass scarring your retina.

i'm almost done retrofitting my fiberglass boxes...just gotta make sure it's completely sealed before i throw 2 10w3v2's into them!

Box is pretty much finished, without the sub the volume is around 1 cubic foot (it as around 7 gallons of water that fit inside.
All that is left is sanding then carpet the box.

Very nice man. Sand it down and carpet it or paintit and that box will look pretty friggin sweet. Not bad for <$65 worth of materials.

well, now the materials and everything has added up to $165, but that includes a bunch of stuff I didn't have and tools, etc...
If I had the know how before hand, I would have saved about $40 or $50 on materials that I didn't use or would have bought in bulk (fiber glass chop mat only, instead of woven and chop mat, brushes, mixing cups, MEKP hardener, stir sticks, gloves, etc..).

I am happy with it though. =)

Yeah. But if you start selling these things, or charge folks for your help, the money in those tools is merely an investment. Even $165 ain't bad. I'm a sure a Q-Logic version would cost at least that.

Sweet! I've been reading up on this process and it seems like a lot of work, not to mention some health risks. Good job! Let us know how it sounds.

I dig the sound, not quite as loud as the big *** wooden box I have, but I had my amp settings below half so I just bumped those a little and its all good.

It is a lot of work yes, but very satisfying. The health risks are not big, just wear goggles and a resperator so you dont get the stuff in your eyes or lungs and you will be fine.

when you start putting the fiberglass down mix like 5 oz. of polyester resin with about 35-40 drops of MEKP hardener.
using foil on top of the masking tape helps, the foil is easier to pull off then masking tape.

This site is probably the best site for learning about fiberglassing and also where I got my design from: http://web.njit.edu/%7Ecas1383/proj/main/

I highly recommend reading all of his documentation, it is very informative.
If you want any help and are in San Jose let me know, even if its just to take pictures thats cool.
