technical term for this...

in a manual transmission, there is a brief moment when the car sort of bounces while the engine changes from actively accelerating to engine braking. does anyone know what the technical term for that is, if there is one? it happens much more harshly in lower gears. it feels like the transmission is trying to respond to the changes of the engine but in a not so smooth way?

um, not trying to be harsh, but have driver maybe learn how to drive stick?

it seems like you're describing what happens if you suddenly let off the gas, THEN clutch in and shift gears, clutch out. passengers then get headache...

this is like confucious say, "Baseball all wrong--man with four ***** cannot walk!"

It's called "bucking bronco" or "needs more practice".

I think he's talking about the driveline slop that you can feel when you get on/off throttle while in gear not while shifting. While the driver can definately help smooth this out, there is definitely an inherent slop that you will feel especially in 1st gear (think parking lot cruising speed). You can avoid it by clutching in when getting off the throttle .

i think he was referring to what Ed was talking about, but i've never heard a term for it.

yeah i'm trying to get a term for what you guys are describing. but i do love all the other suggestions as well

i was wondering about what the technical term is because my car is starting to do that even when i don't let off the gas at low rpms (around 2k). if i just hold steady around 2k, the car will sometimes bounce/jiggle/"bucking bronco"/"needs more practice"/"herky-jerky"/"donkey punch"/"driver fail" in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th gear. i could understand in 1st and maybe even 2nd, but it just seems a little off to do it in 3rd and 4th.

i was just looking for a term that i could tell a mechanic so that he would understand easily what i'm trying to describe. i guess i'll have to go with one of your lovely terms instead. thanks all for the help!

Just tell him it's bucking at very light throttle. Sounds like you may need to clean your MAF or possibly have an issue with the TPS. What mods do yo have7 Motor and tranny mount can help with this as well.

sounds like a good way to describe it. i'll try to explore those 2 potential problems. i really appreciate the advice. thanks!

for mods, i have strut tower bar, chassis brace, and front/rear sway bars. those don't seem like they would cause something like this, would they?

this is what i would would do.
warm her up first.i would try a case of oil or maybe new sprk plugs.after shes warmed up get behind her and place your left hand on her trunk, get real close and whisper"are you ready"then punch her rear glass.it may take a couple trys but she will respond at at some point.that should solve that problem.a proper donkey punch always does
