Tactrix in San Francisco is hiring a technical support rep / office all-star

Tactrix is a small, successful company which has helped create a thriving DIY automotive tuning community over the last 8 years by providing an open-platform of OBD2 hardware and software tuning tools for ECU reflashing and data-logging. To help support our large worldwide user base, we're hiring a new technical support representative, which will increase our workforce by 50%.

The position is primarily focused on helping users with issues they encounter, but has the ability to grow into more depending on the employees skills and interests. Shipping and receiving are also part of the position, although they only take up part of the workday. We are a small but efficient company, so there are lots of hats to be worn and for the right individual there are opportunities to work on web site updates, product documentation, repairs, community outreach, marketing, minor coding, and a lot more. We have many more projects than hours in the day.

While the position would initially be focused on technical support and order fulfillment, it isn't important to us that you have extensive (any) background in those areas. We feel these skills can be learned. We do want someone who has an understanding of cars and the DIY culture. It's more important that you understand these concepts because we can't easily teach them. If you don't know what OBD2 relates to or you've never modified a vehicle for performance reasons, this probably isn't the position for you.

Essential skills:
• Know your way around a computer reasonably well. You don't need to know how to build your computer from scratch, but if something goes wrong you're able to research and fix it. We keep our machines at work running well, but some customers can be another story.
• Windows troubleshooting experience. Not necessarily in a professional capacity but you know enough to be dangerous.
• Ability to grasp new computer applications is essential.
• General dissatisfaction with inefficiency.
• Able to make decisions with little direction.
• Good at organizing data and writing instructions.
• DIY electronics / automotive / computer aptitude.
• Able to lift moderate size boxes for shipping.
• Must pass general and criminal background check.
• Must be able to write well over email and speak clearly on the phone.

Skills that would be a plus but not required:
• Understanding of fundamental electronics, including resistance, continuity, voltage, and how to measure these things with a multimeter.
• Subaru or Mitsubishi enthusiast.
• HTML / CMS editing experience.
• Soldering experience.

Some traits that won't be helpful:
• You frequently get into online forum arguments and you don't know why.
• People would say that you aren't particularly punctual. This position has fairly regular hours. We aren't a retail location but being on-site to work with shippers is essential.
• People would say that your work space / shop space is really messy.

Our office is located in the SoMa area of San Francisco, not far from BART. You need to be able to commute there reliably Monday through Friday. Because we're a small company working out of a funky office space / workshop, our perks aren't the same as a corporate job, but you won't feel like you are wasting your time in pointless meetings either. We do offer full medical coverage and more than competitive pay, so for someone this position will be a great fit . Our work environment is casual and the hours are normal.

If you'd like to learn more, send us an email with your resume attached to jobs_2013_05 at tactrix.com and include your name and "Tactrix Office All-Star" in the subject line. Please send your resume as a PDF file. A formal cover letter isn't required, but please include a little about yourself [such as] recent interesting projects you've worked on, your level of automotive competency, what auto related forums you're a member of, and what you're up to now. If you can point us to any how-to write-ups you've done, that would be a bonus.

Thanks for reading!
-Mike

pho_shizzle, thanks for sending and I'll check it out when I get in to the office tomorrow.

TheFozz, yep, we badly need a third person. We had one until January but it wasn't a good fit. We're thinking the problem was that we hired someone who had a lot of specific corporate tech support experience but knew almost nothing about cars. Not a good fit for our small company. We're hoping if we can get a good fit with the DIY car culture, then the other skills can be learned.

We don't have a formal storefront since we don't sell retail out of this location, but we could probably arrange something in a few weeks. The next couple weeks are really bad since we're shorthanded (thus the job post) and I'm getting married next week. Planning a 3+ day off the grid event for 100 people a few hours north of SF has me pretty busy at the moment

congrats on your upcoming wedding! my wife, who cuts your hair, has been telling me about your business. I wish I were a little more qualified and a little less busy with full time school - I'd love to work in that industry.

anyway, nice to see you on here and make a really roundabout connection.
