super n00b computer question

so i just came up on a new i-mac and i want to transfer all my files on to it from my pc. i have the i-mac hooked up to my LAN and was wondering if there was any way of sending my files over through the ethernet cables instead of having to mail myself everything. im pretty sure is possible, just dont know how to do it. thanks

Turn on Windows File Sharing.

System Preferences > Sharing > check Windows Sharing

Now go peep your network places on your pc. It should show up.

I totally understand. I still have to crawl my way through Macs...

Click your desktop. Click the Apple in the top left. Scroll down to System Preferences.

setup an FTP server on either side and then transfer that way...

or get a 128 or 256 (or bigger) memory stick...

yeah, the mac has FTP server built in (I assume that this is os x?) so thats what I do.

SMB might be the easier option, though, if he doesn't want to fuss with FTP.

if you wanted to connect them directly, you would need a crossover ethernet cable, which is only used to connect two computers directly.

otherwise you'll need a router, switch or hub.

you will also need to install the "appletalk" protocol (on your pc) in order for your PC to speak the "mac language." The apple talk protocol should already be on your PC, but you need to install it. What OS is your PC?

this should help.....

good luck

On your windows machine:

1. Share the folders you wish send to the mac

then like huck said:

1. Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Services
2. Enable Windows File Sharing
3. Go to Mac HD and on the left you should see Network
a. if you do not see network, click the little white button on the top right corner to show more icons on the right
4. Click Network
5. Locate your workgroup (normally Workgroup by default)
6. Double click the Windows computer you would like to connect to
7. Enter the User name and password for the Windows user you log in as

A prompt will appear asking which shares (folders) you wish to mount. choose one (or all) of them. Then it is as simple as dragging and dropping
