Story/Unholy weather in the mountains!!!!!(near death)

Ok...so we're all aware that the weather has been very weird but I've run into a few people that assumed that all this rain ment mad snow....well last storm yes...this storm no.

I drove up Monday night to my place up in arnold. Rain city. Knew the snow level was high but hoped I'd get lucky and it'd drop. It didn't.

Tuesday....some sun some hail. All grap.
Wed....some hail some rain...better slush than ice.
Thursday. RAIN CITY!!!!

but here is the good part.

Wed. my brother and my buddy from the army where up riding. Enjoying some good times despite the slush. We're going down the backside of bear valley..me in front. I stop and my brother pulls up next to me. I say...dude look at those clouds...then bamn the lighting starts. I told him we had 5-10 tops to get off the mountain. We b line it strait to the bottom.

Half way up the Hibernation (16 minute lift) lighting strikes behind us and we sound it off. 4 count. 2 minutes later the rain hits us I look over my shoulder and it's on top of us.

About 15 chairs...maybe 3 poles from the top it happens. lighting hits the mother fricken mountain right in front of us...talking....our freakin lift. Lighting. Thunder. Lift stops...AT THE SAME TIME> INSTANTLY.

So we're hanging there about 25-30 feet in the air in the middle of a cloud that's sending lighting off withing 30 feet of us. I tell my brother...dude I love you. I don't think my knee can take it but if this ***** doesn't move in the next couple minutes I'm jumping. He agrees to follow...my buddy the paratrooper on the seat behind us is thinking the same thing.

It starts. by the time we got off the lift the lift operator whome if my vision is correct was less than 10 feet from getting struck by lighting is standing there telling us to get the **** off the mountain. Every ski patrol on duty was on top of the mountain telling everyone to GET OFF...and it wasn't an angry ski patrol small dick type of thing it was scared.

Needless to say I didn't turn except to miss some gaper skiers on the way down.

The lighting shut the power off to the whole place. Sat down. Internet down. Etc. They were on generators.

An hour in the lodge and they closed the whole mountain because we were surrounded by lighting cells.

Most people on the mountain just thought it was scary weather but those maybe....10 of us that were withing sight of the lighting hitting the lift know otherwise.

My brother seriously hugged me at the lodge and told me he loved me. It was that gnarly. We were within feet of having friends and family notified of our deaths.

Needless to say we killed much beer back at the house.

As for me....I'll be back on the slopes after christmas. God willing this freaking warm weather passes and we get some snow.

Where was this?

I was on a ski lift once during ~40mph gusts... The ski lift chair I was in blew RIGHT INTO the lift pole *BONG* I was freaked out hugging the chair for my dear life. It was not fun...

+1 Glad you and your bro and buddy are all ok.....just goes to show you that when mother nature wants, she can overpower ANYTHING we(humans) have, at the drop of a hat. In reality we are all guests, and could easily be wiped off the planet, and there isnt a damn thing anyone could do about it.

Dude crazy story, and to think I was going to head up with you. Good thing you were in the chair. That was probably the safest place for you. You would have become part of the circut. Energy would not have passed through you to ground. It would have struck the pole and went to ground through the lift. I bet it was pretty scary though. Glad to hear your all right. Awwwww hugs from Jordan. Haaa. Werd we have to get up there for some riding. My new board is screaming to egt cold and frosty.
