sorry to hear about the attempted wheel theft, but as you mentioned, fortunately you realized something was wrong before you got very far and potentially got in an accident.
all thieves suck donkey *****.
btw......
it really doesn't matter where you live, especially in the city. sure, some areas are a little less crime prone, but things happen all over.
one of my best friends in HS lives up there in Golden Gate Heights above 19th, and there are actually quite a few break-ins in that area. His family got home invasioned several years ago. He came home saw an unfamiliar van in his garage, went upstairs, ALL the lights in the house were on but it was dead quiet. Next thing he knew, some dude comes outa nowhere and sticks a Glock in his mug telling him to head to the kitchen.........got in there and his sis+mom+dad were all tied up w/duck tape. they were there for a few hours and took EVERYTHING worth value......jewelry (over a COUPLE $100k in ice+Asian 24k gold+jade+etc), moms' furs, my friend's gun collection, and a bunch of other stuff. fortunately they didn't murk anyone (did pistol whip my friend w/one of his OWN guns tho), but ever since then his fam+the house hasn't been the same....insurance took care of the loss of most of their belongings, but his mom was spooked big time and lives much more low pro. they let the house go bigtime too. it used to be immaculate and filled with stuff, but now it's just rundown inside.
and last year or a lil before that, some kid+his gf got shot while sitting in their car on 1x-th and Noriega (think i remember 16 or 18). the guy made it through but the girl didn't.
not to beat a dead horse, but, again, crimes, incl violent ones, happen even in the most affluent areas. I could share a few more accounts about things in Pacific Heights, Seacliff, Laurel Village, and Hillsborough on the Peninsula, but this is kinda grim talk for a weekend. Some of the incidents don't even make it into the papers & media though. Neighborhood residents+law enforcement sometimes try to keep things under wraps for various reasons.
on a parting note, just be careful out there and try to use common sense at all times. you can't live life scared, but don't make yourself a target/victim either.
oh, and getting back to rain/inclement weather+car break-ins........they actually occur more often in those conditions.....less people/witnesses on streets to deter thieves & noise of the rain masks the sounds of break-ins & car alarms, etc. (one of my other friends had his work SUV broken into on a few Sat's ago in Chinatown on a busy street in broad daylight, but while it was raining. they took his laptop, which was locked+concealed in the trunk and further hidden by the tinted windows......someone probably saw him get out after he parked and move the laptop bag o the trunk before he left)

I now live on the opposite side of 19th, in a much quieter area.

Yes, I know that crimes happen (even) in affluent areas. My parent's home in Pacific Palisades (next to Malibu) was broken into by students from the local h.s. while they were out (most of which were apprehended as they have surveillance cameras on the property).
However, in respect to where I was living back then compared to now, it is a (somewhat) safer/quieter area (perhaps from petty crimes such as stealing parts off of cars, etc.). However, I don't test this [i]theory[/i[, and I park the modded car in the garage at all times while the daily driver is outside on the driveway. I also have security bars on all of the lower windows, as well as a gate in the front and will be installing a security system shortly. Other than being vigilant about my surroundings when I'm at/return home (which I try to always be), there's not much more I can do.

I've had the same thing happen. I believe that someone tried to take a wheel off one of my old cars before, but got spooked and didn't get the job done. Then I drive about 30 miles from home and get to another town, and as I' driving down the street I hear some metal type of noise, turn out my wheel was whobbling and hitting up against the hub.
Also I know people say you shouldn't leave valuables in your car or whatever, but that shouldn't even matter, people shouldn't be so crappy as to steal from other people.

Yeah, cause I come here JUST to talk ****. I stated my opinions and was wrong in his situation. But the assumption part, I was right on which I stated ealier. You don't rob/burglarize a poor person cause he has nothing. You rob/burglarize some one who has money cause you will profit out of it. Even though I dislike it when people steal. But that's just how it works. And a troll?? You're funny. I might be an ******* and such, but not a trol. But thanks for your input and your opinion. There is a saying about that though. Opionions are like *******s, everyones' got one.

no place is really immune to crime....the burbs, gated communities, etc. I have friends+fam in law enforcement and like CreoWRX, I've lived in both NorCal+SoCal for extended periods, so I've heard+seen a lot and in what are considered to be the most upscale enclaves around. Unfortunately, I know quite a few people that have been ripped off too, which is why I always chime in on these type of threads.
most people are pretty sharp and realize that leaving valuables in ther cars & homes in plain view aren't good ideas....neither is broadcasting what you have and other personal info in detail to others, ESP ON THE INTERNET!!
Yet, while most people have common sense when it comes to being low-pro about their biz, there a lot of others that are pretty clueless. Those are the individuals that thieves usually target.I'm not saying that every theft victim brought things upon themselves. You can't always protect yourself+your belongings completely 100%, but you can take a minimal amount of precautions w/out being a paranoid freak. Most crimes involving big lo$$e$ aren't random.
btw, on an semi-related/OT........celebs get hit up too. Cuttino Mobley from the LA Clippers (ex-Queens player) lost over $500k in cash, jewelry, & other misc in a robbery of his Bel Air home a few weeks ago. There has been a recent surge of crimes in the Bev Hills area, and you can bet that most, if not all, those homes had alarm systems+armed security patrollng the neighborhood. Professional+career thieves aren't dumb. Many are extremely intelligent+highly skilled. If they want something that someone else has, they usually can get it. (that includes cars+parts off of them)
