SpecMiata and T2 Lotus head-on crash *pics & vid

David Brand in the Lotus spun in the right-hander going onto the no-name straight.....next through were a few Miatas that were nose to tail, the first went left and the second had no place to go - BAM - head on into the Lotus! The SM Miata of Ken Payson got catapulted into the air and did a complete flip coming to rest on its wheels. Richard Cullen said he had a front row seat when the car went airbourne. I came though a few seconds later and it was like a war zone...yellow flags waving, corner workers frantically running and waving their arms....then the red flag quickly displayed.

They called the race with 6 laps left on the board in lieu of the accident. Both drivers were transported to medical and believe were taken to the local medical facility in Sharon, CT. Upon leaving the track we were told that the Lotus Driver David Brand was released with no major injuries (except to his wallet). As far as Ken Payson, I am not sure if he was released but indications are that he had suffered a broken neck or back (not a 100% confirmed report). Our prayers are with both drivers for a speed recovery."
No fatalities. Elise driver was released w/ some minor injuries. Miata driver cracked some vertebrae Massa-style but should be alright w/ some recuperation. Hans device saved him.

HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!

That was soooo f'ing crazy! It didn't even look like the Lotus was even trying to slow down or get off the track, it looked like he was just going the wrong way on the track! If you view the video right when the lotus becomes visible, you can see it going in a straight ling going backwards, he didnt try to go into the grass or avoid anything. Why!?

I thought fore sure that the Miata driver was dead, that was a NASTY *** crash! He did a complete flip landing on his wheels! That lotus driver f'ed up badly! That miata owner is going to get some money, regardless.

Glad he's ok! Too bad the miata guy didn't get to walk away, why is it always the offending car?!

if he didnt go 2 in when the car started to spin engine coulda stalled. the flag station was waving the yellow frantically. miata driver shoulda been on his A game and stayed left. not saying its his fault, but you cant say the lotus driver did it maliciously.

furthermoe how do you figure the miata owner will get money. its all at your own risk. the most the lotus guy might do is buy him a new car if he is a nice guy. not like they can sue each other out there.

I just figured that today with the kind of lawyers and crap you can get, and with this video that the miata owner will get some money... I didnt notice the yellow flag like you did, so you're right on that part... It just looked like the lotus was totally going the wrong way and not making an effort to move at all.. Maybe because he didnt want to take his car into the grass and sheer off his front bumper? lol jk

I know the lotus guy has money and isn't bankrupt, so there's a good chance the miata owner will get some dough.

That was just an idea and not fact.

I have seen cars get destroyed, where they were settled with an apology, handshake, or possibly handing over of a spare car. This is all at your own risk. Sure, people get pissed but rubbin's racin' right? I once saw an E30 rear end a Radical which went under a Protege and sent the Protege flying toward me on the tow truck - it was coming toward me and I could see the trunk. Totally someone else's fault but the Radical was destroyed and that was that. The Protege drove off, dragging it's exhaust, and was black flagged but did finish the race.

Didn't see what happened but my guess was the Lotus spun and did not have time to react before he saw a Miata coming at him at a rather high rate of speed. Good eye on the yellow flag, and shows how important it is to pay attention to the corner workers!!!!!!

Looks like the Lotus spun across the width of track. The Miata either couldn't slow down enough in that pack, or was trying to pass on the inside (right). Either way, damn it was really fast. I almost missed it the first time through the video.

I'd say the fault is almost entirely in the SM driver's court- the yellow flag could be easily seen for like 3 seconds coming around the turn, the other traffic was slowing and I'd almost bet as he was going around on the inside he wasn't looking ahead, but rather looking at the guy he was passing and saying "why the f- are you slowing dow..."SMACK

What lotus! There is no way he could have seen that coming. I hope that driver can recover from spine injury. Hope he could walk.

Oh. Now, I see that yellow flag right before the crash site. Either case, I don't think you could sue people for that. Like the others already said. Play at your own risk at the track.

yea seemed like that point right when the lotus caught and was no longer going with the flow of the race the guy slammed him.

Hans device ftw

I think I just died a little inside seeing that crash.

Best wishes for Ken Payson's(?) recovery....
