Smart people would have cash around. I don't like credit cards.

My deductible is $500 and my rates are not outrageous. I pay about $215 a month for 3 cars. Full coverage. 2 drivers. 300k coverage.

I've never had a deductible over $500. I suppose I could but I don't usually have $1000 sitting around and I don't like the idea of putting things like that on a credit card.

But that's just me. I guess if you have the means to cough up $1000 at any moment and want to pay $20 a month less then sure that's a good way to go.

It was just a question.

That's just a hair more than I pay for 3 cars too. I changed insurance last year and actually not 100% sure what the deductible is on it right now, but I think it is $500 also.

I pay ~$500/year for insurance on my soob. If I drive safe and don't bother the insurance company, It will cost me $500. All my other money goes into a savings account or something which makes me more money or I spend it on stuff (maybe even on the car?).

Imagine, with $0 deductible I pay an extra $20/month=$480/year. Plus, the original $500. No matter how good of a driver I am, I WILL pay my insurance company $980 this given year. If I am a ****ty driver or have bad luck I might win the bet and get my medical bills paid and maybe some money to pay for another car (but never all of the money, and I'll have to fight for every penny, like Heedz is about to have to do).

So really what you are betting on is that you will spend either <Less than your deductible> or <less than the cost of having $0 deuctible> on repairs in a given time frame.
If I might add something...choosing a higher deductable should actually result in a lower insurance premium because you are agreeing to take on more financial responcibility before insurance takes effect. Insurance company is not expecting all of your accidents to the total losses; it is counting on the smaller everyday stuff (broken windows, low speed parking lot incidents, etc) to be below $1,000 so they will have less liability. In turn, you pay less for coverage.

I have $1,000 deductable and pay about $500/year for full coverage (2 cars); in I remember correctly, $500 deductable raised the premium by at least $200...in a long run, that's a lot of vodka.

Statistically, you save money over the haul with a higher deductible because you pay less on the policy.
Same here. Since I do not have crashes very often, I keep my deductible as high as I can afford, to keep the monthly premiums lower. I look at a crash as "major event" that will cost a lot and be disruptive anyway, so if it cost an extra $2k versus an extra $500, that really does not mean much in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah it's a toss up. They're basically hoping that you'll just cover the "small" stuff on your own.

But sometimes the trade off isn't there. I think for me it was like $6 a month or some crap. I don't remember but it was minimal.

Yes, I understand how it works. ALL insurance is playing the odds of whether or not you will get in an accident, but that has just as much to do with where you live as how you drive. It is the same with any warranty - you are betting it will fail and you will use it during that time and they are betting it won't. You drive stupid, your chances are higher of getting in an accident. You drive in an area with a lot of stupid drivers (pretty much the whole bay area) and your chances are still high whether you drive "nice" or not, but your driving style adds to that risk.

I've only had a few accidents in my life total. The one that was my fault was pretty big though.

The insurance company will still get their money either way - your premiums will go up afterward, mine did because I got a ticket for the accident. Even with "1st accident forgiveness" they will get you when you DO eventually file a claim, so in the long run, you still pay and they still make money. So if you think saving a few bucks a month really means much when you DO get in a big accident, it doesn't.

However, it’s important to choose a deductible that you can afford. Imagine not being able to get your car fixed because you don’t have money to cover the deductible.

When choosing your car insurance deductible, think about how much you can pay without causing a lot of stress in your life? Consider your income, your household budget, your personal savings, and your available credit.
Right from that 21st century site.

Insurance is one of those things that you pay and HOPE you never have to use.

Damn your driveway heedz! It ate my phone...

Phone slid out of my pocket while I was laying under the car, landed face down (a whopping 4 inch drop) and cracked... Gorilla glass my ***...
