is something wrong with my car?

i was about to pull my car out then my roommate tells me something is smoking and i smell something, similar to burning rubber.
i opened the hood and didnt see any smoke, observed the engine while running and no smoke. but what i did notice is this:

IMG_20100901_205637.jpg?1283400536

as i was looking around, this object all of a sudden spun for about 10 seconds then stopped. i noticed the belt around it was spinning along with the pulley without any problem, whatever its called. but i was wondering if this thing itself (the 3 round things forming a triforce) suppose to spin or not, or is it for AC(ac was on)?

help much appreciated. whats this part called?

edit: video added. is this a normal cycle? ac clutch doing what its suppose to do? i dont know -,.-
the whole garage smells funny but i can't pin point where the smell is coming from.

Yes it is the A/C compressor pulley thingy. And it is probably either going out, or you are leaking somewhere

whats the recommended route to fix this issue? and is it harmful to the engine for me to drive around temporarily, at least with ac off?

Don't know about driving it. I just know that is the symptom of the A/C while it is running the the pulley intermittently stop spinning and spin and then stop again? I noticed that my A/C wasn't cold anymore one day and looked at the pulley and saw that happening. No smoke or anything. So either the compressor is going out or I have a leak somewhere.

I took it to a shop where they do a leak test with a special dye and UV light to see where it is leaking from. I have seen this cost anywhere from 49.99 - 79.99

I paid 50 bucks

open the garage door!!! no really though that is the AC clutch dude.

If you have a leak, the oil will stay in if the hole isn;t too big and you'll be aok for k's of miles

alright, i've made some progress.
so, i think the ac compressor and clutch is fine. the smell, i've pin pointed it to the sri filter. so i figured something got burnt and the intake sucked it in. after fiddling around, found out my parking lights are out front and back. i think something may be grounding out from headlight and taillight modifications i've done 2 years ago. i guess i've been tripping over the wrong thing ^_^

That doesn't look like proper AC cycling. It should be running longer than that, and then not running longer than that. Longer cycle.

I would take it somewhere where they specialize in AC, and have them take a look. I bet your High and Low pressures are not correct, and are need of some AC lubrication to be added in the line.

From experience, don't waste your money doing the over the country cans of that ****. Go spend $100 somewhere, and have them hook it up to a machine that replaces the r134a and makes sure there is lubricant and the right levels. Your AC will work again.
