something fell out of my diff!

I was installing the axles on my used 04 sti rear diff and I took a clean cloth and was wiping the oil seals clean and reoiling to make sure no grit got inside and I felt something loose inside and I looked closer and there was this ring:

Best I an tell from this following diagram is that its an o-ring, but I've never seen a coiled wire o-ring so that leads me to believe its something more diabolic like a piece of the side bearing.

anyone have any ideas? I guess I'm going to have to pull the stupid diff

so wait, its not a solid ring? its like a coil/spring? if so then its the spring on the inside of a rubber seal

That goes on the inside of the axle seal. No need to pull the diff. Just pop the seal out, put it back on, then put the seal back in. Or buy a new axle seal they are cheap anyways.

But first we get hassled by the "why don't you just google/fourm search it" guy.

I don't want to look through 2006 threads that's been dead on some random *** Subaru site. I want to communicate and ask question pertaining to my specific problem.
