The scratched window tint would lead me to believe someone had stuck something in though his windaow sill and was trying to pry it back to get inside.

Dog crap, ****, hair, slobber, as well as leaving animals in a hot car? Genius!

If you just keep your car parked in view of where you are at the restaurant, you don't need the dog slobber to combat the thieves.
Of course, the thieves aren't likely to target a car in plain view in front of a restaurant's windows with lots of people able to see them.
Keep that in mind at the mall too, you can park in front of a restaurant even if you are just going shopping.

So what was in view in the car they could have wanted? You should of course make sure nothing is "in view" of any value to even a gutter-luvin penny hunter too.
