San Jose's Miss Vietnam Apologizes for Nude Photos
Feb. 7 (AP) — A woman who was crowned Miss Vietnam of Northern California might lose her title because she posed nude for an adult Web site.
Kim Hoang Tong, 21, of San Jose, won the crown last month for embodying the traditional Vietnamese values of beauty, domesticity and modesty. The Miss Vietnam pageant prides itself on not featuring a swimsuit competition.
But pageant officials recently learned about Tong's past through an anonymous e-mail tip, and the revelation has shocked San Jose's Vietnamese community.
Tong tearfully apologized Friday during a news conference held with her father and the pageant's judges.
"It was stupid," Tong said. "I'm sorry for letting my parents down, letting the pageant down and letting the Vietnamese community down."
Pageant officials said they would make a decision Monday about what action to take, if any.
Some observers say the scandal highlights a growing generation gap within San Jose's Vietnamese community.
"The community is going through huge transition, and it is a huge dilemma how much of our tradition we want to hold on to and how much we need to move forward," said Mai Le Ho, a pageant co-founder and ethnic-studies professor.
In a similar controversy, actress and singer Vanessa Williams was forced to resign her crown as Miss America in 1984 after nude photos she had taken years earlier surfaced in Penthouse magazine. Last year, singer Frenchie Davis was kicked off the "American Idol" television show because she had once posed for an adult Web site.
Two years ago, before she started school at De Anza College, Tong decided to pose nude for an adult Web site for $400 because she needed money, she said.
