So let me get this straight about exhaust components...

The uppipe replaces the cat before the turbo.

The midpipe replaces the cat after the turbo.

the downpipe replaces the cat after the one after the turbo.

A turbo back comes with a center section + dp to replace the two after the turbo?

I'm really confused. I'm trying to piece together used exhaust parts and I need you're guys help so I don't end up with a bunch of random bits of metal.

Also, are there any concerns buying these exhaust components used? Like do the gaskets distort and stuff?

thanks,
Ambert

the head bone is connected to the shoulder bone... the toe bone is connected to the foot bone...

yes, you are correct.

but i was told tha the pipe AFTER the turbo is the downie and the middie goes from the downie to the muffler section.

and the TB = d + m

gaskets should be NEW. no matter what.

FWIW, i have an uppie, downie and a middie, that were all custom made for my old wrx for sale.

everything was made to be bolted in.
leme know if you are interested. the dude used all 3" madrel bent pipes.

Just get one downpipe that eliminates both cats in one shot. i.e. the HKS one. Although you could get a downpipe with a cat and then you still have one cat. You don't necessarily have to change gaskets. The uppipe one more than the others.

this way that way

the upipe contains the precat before the turbo for cold starts.

The downpipe connects to the back of the turbo and contains what many regard as the main working cat.
The mid pipe contects to the end of the down pipe and contains the O2 sensor and the last cat.

Many aftermarket downpipes replace both the downpipe and midpipe sections. Some have a cat(the right choice in CA) others are a straight pipe which might trigger CELs due to the lack of a cat.
I personally have an MRT downpipe with cat and it is great.

You have the downpipe and midpipe confused. DIrectly after your turbo is the downpipe. It's the piece that is shaped sorta like an S. The downpipe leads to the third cat which is the midpipe. If you go with the hks downpipe it replaces the stock downpipe and stock midpipe. With this downpipe you will have eliminated 2 of the 3 cats. You will then need a MIL eliminator to get rid of the cel that will come.

Uppie, Downie, and Middie should be the slang term for the uppipe, downpipe, and midpipe. Everybody start using those terms!

a mil eliminator is basically wires connected to a chip that you splice inline with the rear 02 sensor. It will trick make the sensor read like it's getting perfect readings and will not throw a cel.
