So I'm lucky my house didn't burn down (pics) *56k death*

So the other day my gf noticed that our dryer no longer put out any heat, and also that the timer no longer worked. Literally, you could set the dryer for 60 minutes, leave for work, come home and the dryer would still be running and your clothes would still be wet.

So I go outside and check the breaker panel. Hmm, everything is fine. Reset the dryer switch anyway, just for fun. Try it out, no workie. Check the vent, no clogs. WIERD. Maybe a fuse burnt up, so I pull a black panel off the back (where the a/c cord goes in to the dryer) and I find:

Doesn't look as scary as it could have... it's just corroded, so it probably couldn't spark even if you shorted it right now.

Still a crappy thing to find in your house. Is there anybody you can sue for the mental anguish that caused you? ::banana:

Upon further review... you're absolutely right, since the part I thought was corroded is freakin' PLASTIC! DOH!

Because the melting wires must not have been pulling many more amps than the dryer normally does.

Does this mean that the circuit wasn't rated high enough to handle the current load from the dryer? If so, other circuits that handle 220 might need to be upgraded before the same thing happens.

Well, the dryer was working before. I think it just caught a short back there and pfft, no more wires connected to the fuse blocks.
