Thumbs down So I got my first traffic ticket today

Got pulled over in Colma for not "stopping completely at a stop sign." The cop was at least 1-2 blocks away at the time So he gives me a ticket, and tells me "Oh btw, I'm also giving you a fix it ticket for your exhaust."

Now I only have a catback exhaust, and I asked why he wrote me up for the exhaust.

"It's illegal."

I then tell him "But it complies with the 95 dB noise law."

"It's not the noise, it's the illegal piping and is illegal to remove the stock exhaust."

Since when is a catback illegal?

Btw, since this is my very first traffic ticket, the cop said that I have to go to court or something. What's the usual procedure with this?

I'm searching through previous threads on fix it tickets and not one says a catback exhaust is illegal. So why did the cop give me a fix it ticket? My catback isn't very loud and complies with the 95 dB law.

doesn't sound like he got ride of the midpipe..I mean he said catback?

I'd take it to court. Get something from the part manufacturer that has it's legal information on it...50 state complience..etc. They I'd consider going somewhere to get it db tested and bring that in.

As for the stop sign. You might as well fight that too..since you'll be in there fighting the exhaust.

I got a ticket like that..tried to fight. lost it. The stop sign. I was behind a van. NO way the cop could see me from where he was until after I started to move. The fan stopped over the line. pulled out slow. I moved up to the line..was only a couple feet away and then went. Since I came into view and was so close to the van he gave me the ticket. BOOOOOO.

Cat-back exhausts are legal. They don't affect the catalytic converters at all. They are only illegal if they are too loud, 100+ db.

lol what was funny was that I did stop, but kept rolling just a tad bit. When I saw him flashing his lights at the next stop sign, I did the same thing because I wanted to pull over as quickly as possible. He asked me why I did that and I told him I wanted to pull over quickly. His sergeant came over in another car (didn't see anything) and told the cop to give me another ticket for the 2nd stop sign. He said that he wouldn't (which he didn't). I guess it's quota time or something.

Btw, how much was the ticket for the stop sign?

that's what I told the cop. He said the piping is illegal. Blah.

Can somebody find the Vehicle Code where a catback is legal? Can't seem to find it.

Do you have the ticket? The cop should have written down the number on it.
Then you can look it up and see what exactly you are charged with.

I've already read the VC that he charged me with. I just want to find the law or vehicle code where it says it's legal to have a catback exhaust system.

But the infractions he wrote me down for are

22450 Stop sign
27151 Modified exhaust
