snow/street tires fo rthe winter?

I'm gonna be taking my car up to the snow a lot this year, and I basically just want a tire I can drive from the bay area up the tahoe with no problems. Decent tread life, and work ok in light snow/ice would be great. Nothing fancy, just some cheap tires for winter snowboarding trips that someone can recommend. I'll really only be using my car for going up to tahoe, and small amounts of driving around here in petaluma as I commute on my motorcycle rain or shine.

Thanks a lot for your input, tire size is 215/45/17

P ZERO NERO.

hands down the best all around tire if you plan on hitting the snow.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta WR

I have ~35K miles on the previous generation of this tire, the NRW, of which most are Bay Area miles. They still have plenty of sipes left for snow traction and have performed extremely well for my needs of a Bay Area tire which works well in the snow. I'd recommend these tires to anybody who desires good snow traction with warm weather durability.

How long do you plan on keeping the car? An expensive tire which lasts 5 times as long as a cheaper one is the better deal in the long run...but it assumes you keep the car for 4 or 5 ski seasons.

if it's a daily driver and a snow vehicle and you're running one set of wheels/tires can make a difference in your choice as well.

the pzeros are 400 tread where. Average driving you should see 25,000 miles minimum on them......probably closer to 40,000.

a cheaper alternative is Toyo Proxe 4's.

I know it's hard to bite the bullet on tires but it's the last place you'd want to skimp.

Especially when you're talking about being able to stop, accelerate and turn in snowy conditions surrounded by a bunch of fools in their SUV's who know nothing of how to drive in the snow! Seriously, about a third of those driving up there in the snow are *totally* clueless and decent tires may very well mean the difference between getting home to the Bay Area or spending the night in the mountains with a busted up vehicle.

FWIW, my Nokians are only on the car from the first decent snow storm until the resorts close. The rest of the year I run summer specific Yokohama's which I picked up at the tirerack for $50 each.

I ran the 512's last year. The were great in rain, terrible on dry and mediocre at best in the snow. As soon as they begin to really where....below say 75% they suck in re92 class.

I'll never touch them again. Justin runs the ASX and is happy with it.

I ran the previous generation prox 4 and was happy with them...the new ones I hear are much better on dry and just as good in rain/snow.

another thing to keep in mind is the pita w/ snow chains.

when it's storming, they will want to see snow tires (snow flake emblem) on the tires with AWD. Anything less, and I think they will make you put chains on.

For lowered vehicles it's almost impossible.

Last year I bought chains.

After just 1 trip, a few linkages broke and scraped up 3 of my fenders on the OUTSIDE (i had the bungee chords and everything). My friend and his new Evo faired worse with bad scrapes on all four fenders.

weird..I went through a few storms last year, always got waved through the check points with my all seasons

Did you run chains on all 4 wheels?

also, I think cables are a better bet than chains as you can make em much tighter
