Sniper kills Qaeda-from 1½ mi. away

We could use this guy in NYC.
A British sniper set a world sharpshooting record by taking out two Taliban soldiers in Afghanistan from more than a mile and a half away -- a distance so great, experts say the terrorists wouldn't have even heard the shots.

Craig Harrison killed the two insurgents from an astounding distance of 8,120 feet -- or 1.54 miles -- in Helmand Province last November firing an Accuracy International L11583 long-range rifle.

"The first round hit a machine-gunner in the stomach and killed him outright," said Harrison, a corporal of horse in the British Army's Household Cavalry, the equivalent of a sergeant in the American military.

Yeah a friend of mine sent that to me. Previous record was 7,972 feet in 2002.

St0ich 05-04-2010 11:33 AM

damn, that's crazy
:AAA:

fizay 05-04-2010 11:34 AM

don't they have Green Beret or Special Forces that are trained to do this but from a helicopter? Pardon my ignorance.

pew pew!

That`s just awesome!

Most school trained snipers get a chance to shoot from a helo, very few are actually "trained" to shoot from them. The difficulty of shooting from a moving platform is enormous and isn't a very reliable way to engage targets if there is another way.

It amazes me that there it still sooo much energy even at that distance. Not only did he do it once, he hit the other guy too. Very impressive.

Ok here is food for thought...

that gun is chambered in the .338 LM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.338_Lapua_Magnum

Now,lets assume its at 3000Ft/s with a zero at 500 yards as is typical for most military rifles of its type. So this means zero deflection at 500 yards. At 8,125 feet that bullet deflects (drops) almost 30 inches! (gravity's affects are universal and are only affected by the bullets larger mass causing air resistance to affect it less). This means he aimed a full 30" above the targets head to get that shot! how crazy is that.

2 hits at 2475 meters. Shows what a trained sniper with the right optics, rifle and weather conditions can do...

Lurk 05-04-2010 12:05 PM

BTW, they should give some credit to his spotter. I'm sure without the spotter giving him the correct dope, he wouldn't have been able to make those shots.

Badass!

This is pretty cool, crazy skills. The first terrorist didn't see or even hear it coming, crazy to think you could just drop dead like that from a gun shot wound. Then imagine being the second guy if you saw the first guy drop...LOL you would be pooping a brick. I heard about the previous record as it was documented on some military show I watched, it was held by the US.
