Smog Check II in July 2003

The State of California will require most Bay Area counties to implement Smog Check II vehicle smog inspections beginning 01-Jul-2003. Here's a chart showing the affected counties. This linked page describes the equipment which will be used to perform Smog Check II testing.

Currently, Subaru and other AWD vehicles are exempt from the dynamometer portion of the testing. Those who own the MY02 WRX will not be required to obtain a Smog Certificate until 2007 (the fifth year of registration, if I've understood this correctly), unless the vehicle is sold.

Enhanced Area Vehicles: Only BAR-97 ASM tests are accepted in the Enhanced Smog Check Areas of the state. The only exceptions are for vehicles with full-time, four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, traction control, and specified heavy duty trucks. These vehicles are tested in the two-speed idle mode.

What is the two speed idle mode?

Proly @ Idle rpm, then Idle at x000rpm's... I think my only hope would be to gas up the test center till the technician passed out then tell him "You won a million dollars! ...sign here"

Sniffer test at given RPM under no-load conditions. Like in the old days.

Those with Vishnu EcuTek re-flash at Stage Sub-Zero and Stage Zero may not have to be very concerned.

EDIT: I can't believe how many times I had to edit this post for typos and misspellings.

wheeee... the five year thing makes me very happy about modding. no worries about smog BS.

although i must say that i do plan to keep at least one cat in whatever exhaust setup i run. i do want to keep the air clean. i learned my lesson during water polo practices in claremont in august when it's 100+ degrees and all the smog from LA is concentrated directly over the pool i'm swimming in.

also, in claremont when it's sunny out, instead of the sky being blue, there is a white haze that is always hovering that makes the sunlight very bright, harsh, and just generally not fun to be under.

it really hit me when it just got really nice out here and the sky was that beautiful color of dark blue. makes you want to go out and get stuff done. gotta love this place.
