Go ahead and trade. You're just going to upgrade the turbo anyway, right?
Seriously, these motors and turbos run nearly forever if you maintain them properly. I'd get all the aftermarket goodies he took off the car in the deal as well if you can.

Listen to slow 04 wrx. With that many mods, there is the potential for a LOT of bad stuff. Take it to LIC motorsports in Novato, Auto HQ in Redwood City, GST in Hayward or EQ Tuning in Vacaville.
I took my car to LIC right after I bought it, and I had wished I'd gone there first! They know their stuff so well, they were able to tell me that a different size/type of bolts were used in certain places that were not stock!
With those mods, chances are it had a tune at some point, but who knows if it still does. If it didn't that car may be in a bad way. Absolutely positively don't put them back on and then run it without a tune.
88k isn't horrible, I'm creeping up there in my STI and its doing just fine. 105k is the major service marker where the timing belt needs to be replaced, so atleast that's not an issue.
But once again, get it checked out.
