So as you all know...housing around here is retarded-expensive.
If I want to stay close and spend <$400k...I can get a ~1200-1400 sqft. house with 3 bd in San Jose somewhere that's >10 years old.
They are building so many brand new houses in the central valley it's ridiculous.
I can buy today...a BRAND NEW 2943 sq ft, 5 bedroom, 3 bath house for $323k. See: http://kbhomes.com/community/Communi...&sid=113970560
The only catch is...it's 87 miles from my work, over the Altamont
I do love to drive though, and living in an enormous frigging investment is much more enjoyable than living in an apartment that's ~40 miles from work.

enjoying driving is one thing, but sitting in traffic for 2 hours each way is another, I vote buy a shack....it may be small, but even a small house will grow in value over time then you can pull out your equity and buy a bigger place if needed later on as long as you can afford the mortgage..

coming from someone who has commuted at least 75 miles each way to work.
its not that bad so long as you can change your work hours a bit, like show up at 10 leave at 7 type of deal..
if you can do that its gravy, plusbuy a pos commuter

I agree, I commute from Boulder creek to all over the bay area each day and I normally put at least 100 to 200 miles a day on my new baja. It sucks sometimes, but I love to drive. It is just all the other idots out there that scare me the most, all that irrational driving makes me nutz. I would probally recommend on saving more and buy later. Also times might change and housing might come down, at least one could only hope. Also buying a house that is 10+ years old is not always as bad as lets say buying a Subaru that is 10+ years old. As long as both were kept up good, then the house would be ok, but the car would not be worth keeping up because of the cost vs. deperation value. Houses tend to apricate over time and just about everything else depreciates. so a 10 year old home is not that bad in that respect.
For me, I am in the mountians and am hoping to be able to buy some land and build on it in a couple of years. I hate paying rent, money out the door.

My 35 mile commute (MV-->SSF) is not bad at all. And yes I can certainly work any hours I want and probably do a large share from home.

I have a co-worker that bought a 10yr old house in South San Jose for $390k. It's 1300sqft with no yard, and he pays close to $3k in mortgage. No thanks, even if it's appreciating. And that's a 55 mile commute.

Maybe it's time again for one of these:

I just don't see how some people can drive 75-100 miles each way every day to and from work. I work with a guy who commutes from Tracy to Cupertino every day. He leaves his house at 3:30am every morning to get to Cupertino by 5am. Then leaves at 2pm to get home around 5pm. What kind of life is that? I couldn't hang.
I hear you about the house prices Eric. I will be looking to move to other states real soon in order to buy a house I can actually afford.

But after you watch, "The Life of David Gayle," you will think twice about moving there.
