remember the X PRIZE in which it was the contest to see the first privately funded space launch?

once the they won, both of the pilots were awarded astronaut status by the FAA.

their goal was to reach outer space at around 110 km up but only hit around 100km.

but that was enough for them to win.

so outer space is around 100km. nasa gives out astronaut status to people who fly over 50 miles, which is 80km.

for the record, the space shuttle flights are around 200-400 miles in altitude.

stuff flying around in outer space orbiting earth go higher, like certain satellites that have a geosynchronous orbits of around 25000 (+/-300) miles.

geosync orbits means they stay in the same spot at any given moment over the same spot on earth.
