Semi tried to kill us last night
Heading home at 3am after having dinner and hanging out at some friends' house inj San Jose on Highway 17, coming up on Little Moody, there was a big sand rig in the right lane.
I'm cruising in the left lane with my girl at around 60.
Right as we enter the turn and start to pass the truck, he "wanders" into my lane, completely.
I have no idea how we stopped in time, the truck was doing about 45-50, I'd say.
Right about the time my rear was even with the rear of the trailer is when he came over into my lane.
I can't f'ing believe it.
I hit the brakes and held them at threshold and then dove for the wall.
The nose of the car was practically under the trailer when I turned towards the wall.
I actually came to a complete stop in like 50ft.
The rear tires of the trailer missed the car by some insanely small amount.
The truck didn't hit me, I didn't hit the wall.
I got the outside front wheel up on the lip of the wall a bit, but no rim damage or anything.
I have no idea why the f**k the truck came into my lane.
There were absolutely no other cars on the road any where near us.
I think he either dozed off, or was driving too fast and using both lanes for the turns without looking around.
He might have seen a deer on the side and been giving it some distance.
Those are the only reasons I can think off, and they all suck!
The only partially excuseable one is seeing a deer, which I highly doubt.
Whatever the case, I amazed we didn't get hit or damaged.
I've had my share of near misses before, but never quite so close timing wise.
While it was happening I thought for sure we were gonna get hit, and I even thought of hitting the wall just to avoid getting run over by the trailer.
GF says she didn't like seeing the big trailer tires right next to her.
After we stopped, the truck moved back into the right lane, and just kept driving at the same speed.
I'm not even sure he saw us at all.
I was pissed to say the least.
I laid on the horn as we drove passed him, just to make sure he knew we were there and didn't try to run us over again.
I think maybe from now one, everytime cars approach trucks for passing on 17, they should just lay on their horns the whole way by.
We could start a wake-the-f**k up trend.
I've seen too many big rigs make stupid moves on that road, like deciding to pass while in a turn with invisible cars next to them.
Of course, all this after the afternoon crash where a big rig decided to plow into a bunch of cars.
Insane day.

That's too bad...that kinda stuff is scarey. But you to admit, highway 17 is one the best stretch of roads in the States. Actually as I write this, a similar situation like yours occured with me at 3 AM on hwy 17 on the way back to Scots Valley, but it wasn't as close of a call as yours...truckers can pretty delirious sometimes.

it's funny, i was on 17 at 4:30am this morning, and there wasn't a single semi out, just a couple of guys with fishing boats. what a differance an hour and a half makes. glad to hear you managed to not get taken out by the semi.
I dunno if what my mom said was true or not, but she told me that there was a 20 car pileup on 17 2 days ago? All these accidents are making me paranoid of going back to college in the fall

Yeah, Friday at 1:27 a semi with smoking brakes ran through 18 cars crushing one car between it and a tow truck, setting it on fire, pinning the husband and wife and killing their 8 month-old.
It was a horrible crash and a huge mess.

Did you get his plates? If so, you should report it to the state. In some states (I have no idea about CA) they will even issue tickets based on reports (which I only know because I know a driver who got a ticket for having done pretty much exactly that to someone ... he said he never saw the car ...).
