Selling a used car question #2

If I meet someone at the parkinglot and they want it. What exactly is the order in which the small things occur?

Guy wants car
Guy gives me money
I give him keys
He drives off
I file paperwork
He files paperwork
Done?

What if the dude wants his mechanic to check it before paying? Does he do that before handing over money? Just making sure I get all the paperwork filed right and not just let the guy have the keys without forgetting a step. And yes I've read the DMV rules on selling a used car

If he wants it checked out it's up to you guys how to handle it.

You can drop it off at the shop and pick it up. He pays for it. Etc.

I did that when I bought my old civic. Dude dropped it off at the shop. I paid for and got the report directly. If I bought the car half the value of the report came off my offer.

But yes... he'd do that before money changes hands.

You print out the Bill Of Sale off the DMV, fill it out there, exchange money and the deal is done. THEN you file the release of liability.

ALL of the info is on the DMV site

Car Info: .
i sold my impreza a few months ago and made a bill of sale from one i got online.

follow this:
How to Change Vehicle Ownership

guy wants car
if guy wants mechanic to check it out, do it at an approved testing place. let him pay the fees to check it out. stay there, don't leave. when i sold my car, the lady paid the fee and it took about an hour for car check. if anything feels sketchy, just say so. if he wants you to pay for it...well...that's on you then.

give him copy of smog cert

if you have title, fill out the transfer of ownership section. release ownership, and put new owner info.
guy will fill out back of title for NEW registration. he will then register the car to himself, he will pay those fees to the dmv, and it's his responsibility to do this. (if you do not have a "pink slip" / title, use REG227 http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf ). make a copy of paperwork for your own records.

DO A BILL OF SALE TO HELP PROTECT YOU!!!!!! here is the one i made. give HIM a copy of it, you keep the original.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...Z61EbcYz4/edit

guy gives you money (count it, verify it, if possible, DO THIS AT A BANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Once everything has been done (transfer of ownership filled out, new registration section filled out, give HIM the title "pink slip" (or reg227 if no title) gave him smog cert, gave him copy of your bill of sale, you got your $$$) then give him the keys and wish him well!

do the release of liability online the moment you get home! Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability
it only takes a minute to do.

The bill of sale on the DMV has two copies, both the same. You fill them both out, each party gets one. Makes it super simple.
