Think about it this way -- get on a bicycle and start peddling up a very steep hill. Drop it into lower gear, you'll spin faster and your legs won't hurt as much. Now, change into taller gear and really push -- you may pull some muscles in your legs unless they are really built up.
Crude example, but I think it applies to trannies as well. I'm sure someone alot more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong.
Noah has an FXT transmission (out of Adam's ex '04 XT) in this 2-liter, talk to him. Adam ran an '04 WRX tranny in his '04 XT and was freakin fast -- I saw him at Thunderhill in person, he don't mess around lol.

Bugeye -- maybe, but I doubt gears are any stronger than the '04-'07 ones. '08+ WRX gearsets are stronger, yes. I think the reason FXT trannies hold up a bit better are a) people who own them tend to be a bit more conservative and b) shorter gearing just doesn't create as much stress on the drivetrain than the taller WRX gears.

That's not the case with the 6MT, it holds up to abuse, I don't know anyone personally to have busted a gear, and haven't read anything like that on the forums either... IMO, thats the only reason to buy an STi, to drive it hard. If you don't abuse it, the 5MT will be fine.

100% agreed. FXT will stand up to a good amount of power. Though, if you check sf.org, you'll find people with busted clutches and trannies on the stock TD04. But, some people will break a hammer if you let them.
Talk to Mike (boxerfxt?), he pushed some crazy power in his car before upgrading to LGT 6-speed.

That one is the STi one -- different center and rear diffs, not to mention the 6-speed. I'm not sure she could do the same in a USDM XT, though who knows -- she is a pretty good driver.
Foresters are awesome cars though, all of us should have one lol.
