SBC/pacbell have undergone many many name changes since they were purchased.

It was all seperate...SBC. Pacbell. Ameritech. Soutwestern Bell...etc....

then it went to SBC global and contained all logos....then it was SBC logo with the word connection to the individual company...and now just SBC. which means nothing by the way...SBC has no meaning.

Service has gotten better in some areas and worse in others.

Cingular is Pacbell Wireless....but they sold many of the cell sites so it's actually smaller and not as good as when it was pacbell...trust me...I've had it for 5 years.

Cable is not faster than dsl all the time and dsl is not faster than cable all the time. You can test your connection speeds online..they vary accourding to how many people are actively using and how far you are from the hubs. Pacbell DSL and SBC DSL....the same thing...only difference is that it's been around longer and the processes and knowledge of the equipment is better now...when it first started it was a rush job and no one was trained properly.

Pacbell was great to work for. Employees were rewarded and treated well...and they cared about people...customers and employees as individuals.

SBC sucks really really badly. They care about numbers and matrix...if that month your number is important to them or they need to improve their matrix ratings you will get outstanding service....if not..then good luck...just like the police....beginning of the month you might just get let off or not pulled over at all for a minor infraction...toward the end of the month you will get treated like *** and won't be let off....have to meet the matrix.

I have been working for the company for 5 years and watched it change more an more as the years have gone by.

Watched our stock go from near $60 to near $10....now stabalized around $23 or so. My 401 has lost more and more money as years have gone by..yeah. **** on SBC...only good thing they do is sign my pay checks......and of course monitor my internet usage so some tech guy is probably reading this right now.

My download speeds, where I'm located, on DSL the peak that I've measured is around 800Kb/s, but I more typically get around 500-600Kb/s. With Cable modem, before AT&T put speed limiters on I would get some download speeds around 3000Kb/s (no kidding) and once measured 7000Kb/s. Once AT&T put on the speed limiters, my download speeds were typically 900Kb/s, which is about 30% better than my average DSL download speed, but sometimes, two or three times a week, I would be over 1Mb/s on cable modem. I've never seen a 1Mb/s DSL speed.

I agree that area, network traffic and time all affect these, but generally when I used the network, my cable modem was just faster. For certain things it is much faster than my DSL is, but the DSL is overall good enough.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems at work. I had heard that PB was a good company to work for, even if they haven't been a great business partner.

I've had many friends in the past that had worked for PB.

I've noticed that operators are more *****y now that they are SBC.....like not willing to take the time to find difficult listings, they are probably put under more pressure.

My ADSL service works better now that its SBC, and its much faster than advertised (1191 kbps DL/133 kbps UL). I've noticed that service outtage is now rare, and short-lived if any.

The only thing I'm wary of is switching to the "new" yahoo DSL software. A friend of mine has it, and he claims it works like garbage...SBC keeps sending me reminders to switch over all the time, but I won't.

I don't use the Yahoo DSL software. I did install it initally to load my DSL, but I unistalled it as soon as my connection was stable.

Ah the good ole days when Pacbell Static IP DSL users got plugged into a cisco router bank.
The techs were so busy setting them up they never reset the passwords.
You could just telnet into your router with the default password and remove all bandwidth limitations.
Wheeeee.
