Last time I checked, to be certified with some Oracle DBMS cost upward of $2K-$5K for a 3-4 day training course.

If you want to get a pay upgrade, you should show that you really do want to excel at your job by requesting the company to pay a part of your certification courses, which I know many of them do
I wouldn't pay Oracle that kind of money if I wasn't a DBA. And I'm not, so I haven't.

The certification game is a marketing scheme designed to capitalize on peoples' need to learn. I'd rather pick up a book and teach myself than go to a course that cost too much to learn too little information that has too short of a shelf-life so that by the time a year has passed they have a different version of things and your cert is now obsolete.

The only one of my certs that I've ever found remotely beneficial was my Sun 101 schooling, and that's only because that time I chose to let someone else teach me instead of just picking up a book.
