sake drinkers?
If it's one of your alcoholic drinks of choice, post here.
I'm trying to find that right price point of "tastes good/right, not too expensive".
So far it looks like you have to go local to get ok stuff inexpensively. (ie Momokawa Diamond or Ruby, or Sho Chiku Bai Premium Ginjo)
Also... can you smell sake on someone breath?

I love sake. And like most alcohol, you get what you pay for in most cases.
I've had so many good ones, but never seem to be able to find them consistently. I prefer a nice dry sake well chilled.

friday nights used to be my sake nights. was never a fan of the sho chiku bai stuff but the momokawa diamond i do enjoy. give the tozai nigori a try if you're in to the unfiltered.
you'll also be surprised and some of the stuff you can find at cost plus world market. hat tip their buyers... not just the sake, but wine too.

Go to your local Japanese supermarket (Nijiya or Mitsuwa) and ask the staff for recommendations. Obviously, ask the middle-aged Japanese male manager guy for advice
And yes, you can smell sake on someone's breath.
P.S. Hakushika Gouka Sennenju Junmai Daiginjo and Chiyomasubi "Ryo" Junmai Ginjo (this one's especially good on a hot day). And if you heat either of these up, I'll slap the **** outta you
EDIT: Forgot to mention one more: Kikusui Junmai Ginjo is tasty too.

If you're in the Berkeley area (I-80, near University Ave. exit), you may want to check out the Takara Sake Factory's tasting room. According to the website it's a $5.00 fee, open noon to 6:00 P.M. daily.
Used to have parties there back in my undergrad days at Berkeley. Not sure what it's like there now, as it was over 10 years ago.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone tried Japanese Shochu? A bartender friend recently had me try a Shochu Mojito. I thought it was strange at first, but actually turned out to be pretty good.
Shochu is basically like Korean Soju, but smoother and doesn't have that rubbing alcohol smell that Soju sometimes has. If anything, it's more like a vodka (with less alcohol content) and makes a good base for mixed drinks.
