A sad sight
I went into work this evening (Moffett Field).
At the front gate, on the NASA sign, there is a memorial to the Columbia Astronauts.
It is just a table full of flowers, and a poster, but it was pretty sad.
I am sure that it really hurts home for the Ames people. They do so much work on the shuttle project there.
What a bummer.
The shuttle is a sign of American power, and ingenuity.
To see it come down in a ball of fire should be a sad sight in the eyes of all Americans, and in the eyes of the free world. I am sure it is.

NASA does come under a lot of undeserved scrutiny. Everyone seems to forget that they are largely responsible for the state of technology today and being a MAJOR contributor to getting the ball REALLY rolling in the 60's. Think about all of the inovations and patents that come from working on the space program and you realize that NASA is one of the few agencies that has one of the most mind boggling ROI's in the world. Hell, the patent on Velcro alone would have probably paid the national debt a few times over if NASA could actually collect on it.

that's actually a marketing ploy used by certain manufacturers... there are NO products invented because of the NASA projects or experiments up in space.. but rather, companies SELL items to NASA... and market themselves as a byproducts of NASA projects or experiments...
just like your example... velcro was not the product of any NASA project of experiments... it is however one of the first users of such products which was discovered here on earth, while walking through a field.

The crew of the space shuttle Columbia are true American heros. May future generations dream of traveling to the stars, as have generations past.

but i think there is a misconception that tons and tons of patents and products came from space projects... which is not true.... certain companies use the NASA name to market their products. i think teflon is something that comes to mind and also the drink tang...
