Is it rude to ask a seller for a receipt so you can have proof of purchase?

Simply why be offended. Just say you don't have one. Whats the big deals. I think it is reasonable to ask for a receipt.

Yet the old hags that work at the Voting Stations get upset with me when I show my ID to them.

I wouldn't get upset with a buyer if they asked for a receipt and they should not get upset with me when I tell them "no".

The receipt may contain personal info that I don't want to show the world.

This is 100% correct.

I arrested a guy for buying a 3000$ mountain bike for 100 bucks. He said he knew it was probably stolen and knew thats why the price was so cheap.

It doesnt matter if you stole it or not, if you reasonably should have known that the bicycle was stolen, your guilty of PC 496 (possession of stolen property)

especially on things said to be brand new, i usually keep receipts till i use them, on anything more than $100 i'll usually atleast keep the reciept for 30 days... if there's a reasonable excuse such as previously mentioned, there should be no reason to get frustrated, just explain the situation.. people need to learn to calm down

Well if you still want an ipod let me know. I have a refurbished 8GB iphone touch (1st gen) that I want to get rid of.
No receipt but since it just got swapped out at the apple store it's NOT stolen (and for the record it never was. I bought it off ebay broken, fixed it and then had apple refurb it)

It's just right to ask for a receipt when buying something expensive. When I go to buy something on Craigslist I print out a copy and get a receipt from the seller. If the seller gets all crazy about the receipt or doesn't write me one, then I walk away from the deal. I don't need any problem with stolen stuff or someone claiming that I didn't pay them! It's getting crazy now as criminals are getting more desperate for money. Recently car buyers and laptop sellers have been ripped off on Craigslist.

Not a big deal to ask for a reciept. The bad thing here is if it was stolen, and you bought without knowing that information, you could get arrested, and the guy who sold it to you could deny everything and youd be stuck.

good for you.

I had my over $3000 race bike stolen out of my house. One of the shop guys saw it and called the cops. The cops refused to take the bike because they couldn't prove it wasn't the guys. He said he paid $200 at the flea market for it. Mind you the seat post and seat alone were worth over $200. So we tracked the guy down and I showed the cop my receipt and the warranty card for original purpose and had 2 witnesses to the multiple one of a kind parts on the bike. The shop didn't keep record of my serial number (they're suppose to) and my warranty card had the last few digits illegible.

The officer refused to take the bike from the guy and at least hold it until one of us could prove who it belonged to. Shortly there after the bike "disapeared" never to be seen again.

The bike was purple and was COVERED in blue annodized parts. Custom built wheels. I ground all the paint off the bars and polished the raw metal. Etc. The dude couldn't even figure out how to get the back tire back on.

anyways.... long and the short. Good for you.

Daniel. No it's not an unreasonable request but I wouldn't get upset if someone said no I don't have it or no you can't see it... etc.

We found one not to long ago and it was engraved. We tracked the people down and gave it back. There's a lot of "found" ipods out there being sold. Ipods and phones are popular items to be "found" by people.... or "purchased a newer one".

Good for you for trying to be honest.

I've been selling electronics online and locally for a while now and I never get upset when someone asks for a receipt but depending on the item, I usually don't want to deal with people that ask too many questions.

For example.. sold a perfectly fine hard drive to some fool on craigslist and I specifically asked him if he knew how to install the drive. He said yes and an hour after we meet up he calls me up and asks me how come Windows isn't showing up. Then he starts accusing me of selling him a dead drive.. yada.. yada.. tried to help him install it over the phone and in the end just told him to go to best buy and have the geek squad install it for him.

So.. what does this mean? When a person asks too many questions.. they go straight to the bottom of my list of people I want to sell the item to. Less headaches and simple solution for me atleast.

//edit Anyone want to buy a laptop hard drive? I've got a 2.5" SATA 160gb 7200RPM Hitachi that came out of my brand new Lenovo laptop.

i wouldn't be upset either, i always keep my recipts in the box of whatever electronic device i get just so in case if there's a situation with warranty i can present necessary documents. it's just a habit to hold onto the box and recipt for me.
