is it a southern california term? One could say, if there are a lot of people in a party, damn there's a grip of fools up in here. I use mad, hella, and grip, not so much hella.

Grip can refer to money as well. At least that is my understanding of the term.
Oh, and BTW, these words are not limited to "Nor" or "So" Cal, believe it or not, slang is used OUTSIDE of the Golden State.
