Roof Rack/Snow Chain questions
Which roof racks do you guys run?
I know the Yakima Q-towers will work, but it seems as if our cars have rain gutters so will the gutter type work as well?
I'm looking at used setups on craigslist, so Im not sure what will fit and what wont
Also, what chains do you guys use? I'm hoping to find some that will fit my 235/40/18's without scratching the rims, I realize this may not be possible

You should be fine through chain control driving a Subaru with all-seasons. If you're going to be traveling into snowy regions often, I'd recommend a set of dedicated snows though.
I got my ski rack (yakima) from tri city, they have lots of good deals. They also have a chart that shows what rack would fit your car for your needs.
With michelin alpin snow tires, I got waved on every checkpoint though Tahoe. I think that you only have to 'carry' them with you. They would close the roads before you had to put them on.

Bring the chains, don't worry about ever having to use them. Either 80 and 50 have 'chains required, awd+4wd w/ all season tires OK' or they close the roads. But you're right, we're supposed to carry them...and they could possibly help if you're up in an unplowed development or something.

I guess im set, AWD+all seasons should be good to go, ill carry some cable style just in case.
For your yakima setup, is it the one with the Q-towers/Q-clips or do you use the gutter style?

...I have a wagon so my Yakima clamps on to the factory rails, sorry I can't help with that one...
I have whole yakima set up on my STI. If you buy the Q clips, it comes with the rubber pads that fit into the gutter. You just have to make sure you follow the measuring instructions for the subys to align it properly.
i have a thule setup that i picked up off a member here for 250 earlier this year.
but like someone said earlier, you can just go to their websites and it'll show u what will fit our cars.

It's nothing new, but I've never been asked to show that I have chains. I carry some old rusty cable chains I used to use on my Civic just in case they do ask...
