left bank is good. a friend of mine had his externship there from california culinary. brought home food alot of the time. if you're feeling adventerous the steak tartar is fantastic.
hmm...have you tried nolas in palo alto? if you like cajun food that place is great. nice atmosphere, good drinks. good place to take a date.
or you could go to buca di beppos. italian food, lots of it, all of it really good.
both of those places are on university btw.

Funny, a good friend and I were just talking about this - his all time fav restaurant ever is House of Prime Rib. I still haven't been there, and I need to check it out.
My favorite restaurant in the Bay Area so far is Suppenkuche in SF. It's a German place and the food is top notch, totally awesome. Try the venison.. Good beers, nice environment and I just always have a great time there.
Another cool place and a good one for a date is Ramblas in the Mission. Spanish tapas, sangria, and their own beer as well. The A Tavola restaurants are great too (A Tavola, TOWN, Mistrals, etc). There are zillions of awesome places though - you could make a career out of trying them.

it's in Hyatt Regency... phone number is 415-291-6619 (yeah I have it in my cell. ). Just make sure you sit in the 'right' direction, otherwise you might get motion sickness (some do, I don't)... btw, I thought it has a cool view, but food was not that spectacular...

Are you referring to Left Bank? Because that's much closer than Menlo Park and San Mateo for me. Thanks!

Palomino is San Francisco right off the freeway by Fishermans Warf is really good as well.

Both places are within your price range and have fantastic service and food quality.

Been there, not that great. I had prime rib (of course) and my gf had the filet mignon. You can tell the prime rib was individually prepared (instead of the whole 'block' of meat like House of Prime Ribs). The filet mignon was so so, had better and cheaper!

I say cheesecake factory and olive garden are both better than pasta pomodoro. However, pomodoro is cheaper...

Anywho, Depends what you're up to. Joe's on second street is pretty decent Italian for a decent price. Hawg's is good seafood. Pagoda at the Fairmont is great(although not sure if it would stick to the $30 a plate max. Le Papillion on Saratoga is good french. Forbes Mill Steakhouse is some good stuff in LG. The Faultline is Great! Paolo's, Stratta, Grill on the Alley, Blakes, Stumps, all kinds of good dining down here. You can always go to Dac Phuc and at least have fun with the name while you're eating.
How about Pacific Fresh or maybe red lobster if you are really budgeted.

There are probably hundreds of restaurants which match your description...
A great site:

For something in San Jose a little off the beaten path, try Chez Sovan. It's Cambodian and excellent.
