Replacement engines?

Turns out that Subaru has cashed my $35 check to transfer the extended warranty from my prior owner so I think I'm covered for a lot of repairs. I'm at 77K miles now and the warranty goes up to 100K so I plan on having them replace my rear struts, front wheel bearings and possibly my rattling rear view mirror. To make sure that I'm using the extended warranty to the fullest extent, I've noticed that some people have had their WRX/STI engines replaced b/c of a rod bearing failure of some sort. My question is what are the symptoms and which dealer in the Bay area can I trust to diagnose and perform the engine replacement if indeed my engine is suffering the same symptoms? Is this a common occurence b/c I see a few WRX/STI's on Craigslist with replaced engines. TIA!

I'm afraid 4EVO is right. The manufacturers mantra is "if it ain't broke we don't fix it". I'm also afraid you going to get acquainted with "wear items" like struts and bearings. Broke in half-OK,half wore out-too bad.Make sure the services are up to date and hopefully a good service record exists on the car. If so just drive the snot out of it, you'll find out if it's sound or not. GOOD LUCK to you in any case.

This was the first mention of bearing failure I've ever heard of.

I would think you'd need to do something really silly, like run with no oil or something to get the bottom end to fail on these.

my motor went about 160,000 before burning a valve, but I'd expect the crank and pistons are probably good for another 100,000 +

Have you been living in a bubble? 99% of all the motors that go, fail due to bearings. Hell 5 of the 8 motors I replaced was due to bearing failure.

Petes talking about an all stock motor(not modded in ANY way, like petes) are not known for spontaneous rod bearing failures. And no, I havent heard of bone stock motors having a problem spitting out rod bearings either. Modded on the other hand....

Under "something silly" I would add;

running 30lb boost,

trying to get 400 hp out of 2 liters,

letting some hack "tune" your motor

stuff like that-

no I haven't been living in a bubble, I've been out driving the crap out of my car-

Do you know anyone else with 225,000 miles on their WRX?

psoper, how have you driven that motor?

FWIW, the only stock motors that I have seen fail have been modded motors.

I know you have some miles on your car. My first motor, the 2.0L went out at 27,000 miles. The only mod on the car at the time was a TBE. Simply put, the open/closed loop delay tuned into the stock ECU's programming will destroy your motor. The lean condition that is caused by this delay is enough to cause damage to the motor. Adding a turbo back exhaust only makes it worse. I am in agreement with you that modding increases your chances of causing serious damage. It certainly doesn't help matters. If you choose to mod, be sure you have your "Hack" on board. You'll be sorry otherwise.

I haven't been on any drag strips if that's what you are asking, but I haven't exactly babied it either. I've driven to Tuktoyuktuk in February, a dozen trips to Montana, probably that many to Arizona too.

And I will admit that I'm on my second motor, when I burned the valve at 160,000 I bought a short block and a pair of heads and had Gruppe-S do the swap.

I seem to be able to keep up with all but the newest and baddest Porsches in the twisties, and I can get speeding tickets just as easily with 227 hp as I figure I could with 320, so I never saw a need for modifications.

BTW Paul- don't only male unicorns have horns? if so- that has to be the gheyest avatar I've ever seen... between that and Kyles bubble, this whole thread is getting pretty fruity
