Hey everyone,
I watched a video with a remote turbo setup on an LS1 240sx and it made me wonder if a remote turbo setup could pass Cali emissions standards since the turbo would be mounted behind the cats.
Obviously a car wouldn't pass with a non-OEM engine, but if the cats were left in place and the engine looked to be stock, while still passing smog... would you be in the clear?
Enlighten me, yourself...
or hit me with a brick.

a turbo has nothing to do with smog, or a fmic, or any engine mod lol I passed with a 30r just as clean as a stock wrx

Yeah. Hell the turbo is classified as a part of the smog equipment in some states.
As for a non oem motor. You can pass smog. There are all kinds of ways to get through that stuff. My cousin's room mate was daily driving a 240 with an LS1 in it.

If I recall the system fits into a loophole for smog... but it's a BAD idea
Having a turbo in the muffler location is asking for a road debris hit. Air and Oil Lines running that far is just asking for a problem

LSX swapped Miatas and RX7's are fairly common swaps. I would personally love to have either one. There was someone on Craigslist actually that was selling a LS7 powered RX7. 500whp in a 2800lbs car would be pretty scary though.

Seriously. I didn't want any of that crap under my car. My caddy has a seat heater. It's basically another heater core with a fan in the middle of it that shoot air up the passenger seat and into vents in the floor. Pretty rad for 1953. But I didn't like the idea of 60 year old hose running 5 feet under the car and back. So I crawled under there and cut it out. I was kinda bummed to do it as I like the idea of having all the 53 options functioning. But I just had nightmares of coolant all over my brand new carpet. Damn near blinded myself pulling those hoses out. I think they were damn near 14 feet between the to and from hoses. LOL. And they were crunchy!

There's one that's smog legal, but you'd have to swap the engine in from a GTO/Camaro/Firebird , get it to the referee, then pay $$$ to buy the thing and get it installed/tuned. Seems like the long way around to make power.

I'll also note.... LSx motors are famous for sheering off ring lands when using power-adders (turbo, supercharger, N20). The Hyperutecnic Pistons are too brittle for the cylinder pressures that boost adders produce.
When I had clients ask for Superchargers, I'd always push head and cam packages as they cost about the same installed and the engines last much longer

That would also pretty much destroy the weight balance of these cars. In the case of RX7 and S13, both have more or less perfect balance as is and with a V8 hanging out front they will both be nose heavy and RWD. Not exactly the best combo. Fun? No dobut, but will likely also be a handful.

Just looked it up and average weight of an LS1 seems to be right around 420lbs with accessories. A KA24DE is 310lbs without accessories, so about a 100lb delta. Even with an aluminum block, that would still be a pretty big delta in the 75lb range. That is lighter than I expected for the LS1, but sill not going to give you 50/50 balance.
My chick used to have a small block Chevy (probably LT1, iron block) 280

LS1 FD corner weights versus stock FD - RX7Club.com
LS1 RX7 actually had a better weight distribution then a stock RX7.

Cool, never knew that about the FD. I had a S13, but never owned an RX7. Is the 13b iron block then? Or just because of those rotors that it is so heavy (comparatively)?
