I've always used premium gas but is it really needed? Why does Subaru state recommended instead of required?

For a car that calls for premium, yes. For one that does not, then there's really no benefit to running it. Recommended MINIMUM octane, not simply recommended, because the default setup is expecting a certain level of octane to prevent detonation. Using a lower octane in a car not intended for it, the car will adjust to prevent detonation and you will lose power and mileage.

Because the ECU will compensate and still run the car... but I wouldn't do it. 91 is safer, period, for these turbo engines.

That article makes my head hurt, there is so much bull**** in it, its not even funny. People who don't understand the fuel industry or how fuel is cracked and combined should not write articles about it.

Yep. Got two paragraphs in and couldn't read any more. Just because there's an article on a topic doesn't mean the person who wrote it knows that they're talking about or doesn't have an agenda.

Article yesterday showed places across the US with 87 under $3 and while it is going down here, $3.89 for Chevron is the best I've seen in my area for 91.

If gas type does not mater the. You should get the same power and tuning of 87 as you do on 93... But that's bs and we know when you tune the car it's not the same on each grade of gas!

On the East Coast. In Sweden, I have to choose between 95 or 98 octane. 95 is the lowest option at most stations.

What is the difference between paying off your student loans and trying to get out of them? That is the real question!

Saving 20cents a gallon at a time man, don't knock him for trying.
