a few years ago, while at vegas, i saw a bumper sticker on the majority of the taxi cabs:

"if you can see the bottom of my rear tires, thanks for being a good driver"

i thought about it and it does make sense.

so been doing that ever since.

now if i'm in an area where my red flags might go up, i leave enough space for me to drive around and escape...

All of chiming in on this one are aware of how fallacy of this rule of thumb right?

For this car you'd have to be 3+ car lengths away to comply with this "rule of thumb"

And for this one, you could be tossing the salad of this guys rear diff and still comply with the "rule of thumb"

That's why it's a "rule of thumb".

Either way, I never really had any reference pont when pulling up to a stop. I just use good judgment.

Hell, a lot of times there are people that rode their brakes for a 1/4 mile before the light and realized they stopped too soon. So they'll incrementally ride their brakes to close the distance during the red light. Before you know it, everyone is scooting up.

I usually keep 2-4 ft away and not tailgate people, but there are a lot of stupid drivers out there. I don't know if you guys deal with this problem, but when you drive and say it's downhill and your not worried about the car behind you being too close, your good. But when it's uphill and your driving stick, the car behind you is so freakin' close you can't even see the headlights. I don't know about you guys, but that happens occasionally to me and it pisses me off.
