I don't think anything short of a race car could have even *maybe* made it around that turn at ~ 100 mph. The speed limit is 35, and Rob mentioned that the highest manageable speed with a properly set-up car might be as high as 60. The guy was going so fast that, according to the police, "he never even started to turn."
Plus it was likely a bit damp/wet out.
I don't think R compounds and coilovers would have prevented this one...

I can't imagine what his family is going through... but I don't want to make assumptions as to why he was speeding like a maniac.... Not with a wrx, but there are stories of gas pedals getting stuck in wot.

But that happened to me. Stupid floor matt pushed up and my pedal stuck in it. Sucked. Burned the hell out of my clutch trying to get it free, turn and not die all at the same time.

Maybe an evil villian placed a bomb in his trunk and if his speed dropped below 70 mph it would explode. That would explain why he didn't stop when the cops lit him up. Your right the pesky hurricane force winds in Santa Clara might also be the culprit.
Whats so hard to figure out about this he was speeding, ran from the cops, crashed into a pole. Seems pretty straight forward. Again this is a tragedy for his family and friends and it sucks hes dead, but he rolled the dice and lost.

Ah. Yeah, I know that guy. Sad
....totally not a punk, either. At least he didn't come across that way. I can't believe he was running from the cops. He must have been a bit drunk/high/in a not-clear state of mind...
