Consider using bankrate-dot-com 's cost of living calculator, or at the very least, consider stealing their consumer price data for your calculations (Data on home price and rental prices may be out of whack now thanks to the mortgage thingie, so you could take random sample on craigslist for a more accurate reflection of the market today). The data is based on research by the ACCRA. To try to duplicate their datasets on your own would be a lot of work, plus you might not want to commit that much time sampling enough data points to create a statistically significant dataset.
