2006 RallyCross National Challenge. June 24-25 at Thunderhill, Willows, CA.

On the heels of the highly successful SCCA RallyCross National Challenge last October at Motorsports Park Hastings in Hastings, Nebraska, SCCA's Rally Department has announced an expansion of the National Challenge schedule, with five summer and fall events planned for 2006. Other than studded tires, you can run anything you want. Even slicks if you're so inclined.

Are you planning to use the regular rallyx plot of land for the national? Or maybe the rallyx school land or some other place?

Yup, same land as the regular rallyx events. Hopefully we can squeeze more space out into the motocross area where it's still flat. Thunderhill only gives us the
"school" side of the road once a year due to well/drainage issues they are concerned with.

You'd probably want to run stockers and RE92s to keep your p45s nice and shiny. Either way you'd want to bump up the pressure to strengthen the sidewalls.

Rally tires are certainly the best you can do, but most people run with stock tires (ie, we've had plenty of STis with RE070s) and they still have fun.

Here is the complete list of hotels in the area:

http://thunderhill.com/html/lodging.html

Call them direct and ask for the "Thunderhill rate" - most people tend to stay at the Best Western, but the Amerihost is a bit more posh.

The site at Thunderhill is about as nice as you'll find for rallyx - mostly flat, hard clay. Some ruts can form over the day though, and over the years a few plastic skid plates have been claimed. With lowering springs you could haul *** through most of it... but could always have the option to slow a bit if a corner gets torn up. If you're lowered AND have a lip or those STi corner splitters... that may be pushing it.

18s and Ecstas are ok though, you'll just need to air up since you don't have much side wall support. Yeah, rally tires are ideal (or other M+S rated with strong sidewalls) but like I said above most people are stock, lots with tarmac tires, and you can still have a lot of fun.

I'd suggest switching to stockers with RE92's for WRX's. Those tires really surprised me in the dirt. I ran them at the 2 day event last season and got 2nd in my class for the event. Just make sure to bump the pressure way up (41-42psi) and not do anything stupid on a fun run that ends up taking a tire off the rim .

Going to register for Rally School and maybe Rally Cross as well. Sounds and looks like a lot of fun!! Anyone have feedback on the Rally School...like it, didn't like it???

Thanks,
Roger
