Quick question: Can you bake your taillights like you can with your headlights?

I want to black out my headlights and taillights (silver part on tails) and just wanted to make sure that I can bake the tails like the headlights (bake them so the glue gets hot so that you can remove it).

I'm going to be doing this tomorrow in the afternoon sometime if anyone wants to join me and do the same thing to their car. I'm located in Fremont.

If you do want to join me and do this to your car (so that you don't do it alone), reply in this thread and I'll PM you my address. Again, it'll be in th early afternoon at around 1ish maybe. Nothing is set in stone.

Also, I need to pick up some paint and sealant for the job, anyone know where to get the said parts? I want to make the color a super dark grey or flat black... The sealant is to seal the plastic back up so that theres no condensation.

I highly recommend this modification! I have a urban grey STi, changing just the tails ALONE makes the CRAZIEST difference, it's insane! Soooo much nicer.

Instead of blacking out the tails, I was also thinking of getting some clear red model paint and just painting the clear part red so that it doesn't look so Altezza-like. It'll save me a lot of work too. The headlights for sure are getting blacked out, I can't stand the clear crap anymore!

Thanks for the help. I did a search but our search feature is soooooo sloooooow right now

For the tails a heat gun and a nice sharp blade will get the job done.

Do not recommend attempting to modify one's taillights. I, like other very wise subie owners, swapped my 06 tails for new OEM 05 tails. Fast, and easy to order a set from Subaru.

How much do the tails cost from the dealer?

The only thing I'd be doing is painting the clear section (minus reverse lights) a clear red so it doesn't look like altezza lights! I dont see the danger in that. Money doesn't grow on trees, and I'd rather buy food then taillights

I think I paid $200 something. Can't remember, but for under $300/pair of BRAND NEW OEM 05 taillights, I wasn't going to fudge with my stock ones. Plus I love the JDM taillight mod for the 04/05.

Nope. But the Lightwerkz custom LED tails may be worth it to some of the more baller folks running around.

They have less light output than the OEM 04-07 taillights. I would never do something that decreases the brightness of my brakes/running lights, esp at night. It'd be great if someone offered a solution for GD imprezas that used real OEM led's like you see used on most brands nowadays, including new Subaru Imprezas. Those actually improve efficiency by offering better light output than our traditional incandescent bulbs.

For headlights, yes... For tail lights, no.

Of course there is a difference in light output, whenever you tint a bulb or glass that covers the bulb you are "tinting" the bulb and decreasing output of light. However, since it's the tail lights the difference is so minuscule that it would be hard for an expert to even notice. Besides, red catches your eye the most, so it doesn't matter if a light is dim or bright, ANY flashing red light will catch a humans eye.

So with that being said, anyone know where I can get clear red model paint? Perhaps Kragen has an actual kit that is made for this?
