Question to the law pros around here...

So........a friend of mine decides he's gonna mouth off to a police officer a little and ends up getting a ticket. He signs the ticket with:

"Blow me"

anyone know if he can get in trouble for this? Obviously the judge is going to have less pity on him when it comes to lowering the bail/points when he goes to court, but can he get in trouble for this which is different than the reason he got the ticket?

I would think no because signing the ticket is simply an acknowledgement that you received the ticket. People can sign however they'd like (there's no law to how your signature can/can't look) so I would assume they can't get him for this.

maybe they can't "legally" get him for anything, but i'm almost quite certain it's not going to look good when he appears in court to speak to the judge on what happened the day he was given the citation

no point for you friend to even go to court. Just pay the fine and move on.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them deny him traffic school as it's at the judges discresion.

It depends on the crime for which he is charged. If it's simply an infraction, they would still have the discretion to order him to jail...

...which might do good for his attitude.

Yeah, that's what I was thinkin. He can technically sign however he wants since it's simply an acknowledgment...

Good point, I'll suggest that to him.

I am going to next time I see him, he has a little attitude some times, and it can really get him into some ****, such as is described here.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, because you can be put in jail for not signing a ticket, so I'm trying to figure out if by signing the way he did, if that is considered "not signing".

I think it was like an illegal turn or something like that. It's just an infraction, I know that.

I was actually kinda thinkin about that, but since the name change would technically happen after the ticket was signed, it wouldn't be admissable.

OK so i think i clear this up before people go on talking **** about stuff they dont fully understand... yes i was pulled over in palo alto (not a suprise) for doing 50 in a 35 ( i honestly thought it was 45 where i was) i had pulled onto alma going south which i thought was already central expressway which i find out it didnt turn into for about another 150yrds and there were not any speed limit signs from where i had turned onto alma the last one was right before the street where i turned onto alma and what happens i get pulled over the cop walks up to my car and asks for license etc and starts to walk away and i then ask him what i was pulled over for (thinking it was for no plates on a 10 month old car) he said speeding (no mouthing off to cop) and and walked back to his car when he came back with ticket in hand is when i got pissed and explained to him that there were no speed signs after where i entered alma and i genuinely thought it was the expressway and then said o well take it up with the judge... that pissed me off
Its not like i was out joyriding .so i wrote blow me on the ticket and that was it....i am not eligable for traffic school anyways so i dont care about that ...insurance is in my wifes name for the wrx and i am the primary on her car so that does not bother me either....But i will fight it as there was no posted speed limit sign after i turnd onto the road and it was not the tickiting officer that was working the radar it was his supervisor who was a bigger dick than the tickiting cop.....so end story it was not Mouthing off that got me the ticket that started afterwards....... Thanks

hope you get out of it, but you probably wont unless the judge is having a good day. I would recommend taking pictures and getting the laws on speed limit signs and where they are to be posted. This way you have the pictures and paperwork to back you up.
