i prefer the savage w/their new bedding system and trigger but thats just me. .308 is good for plinking/target but for anything over 400 yds a .300 win mag is good. much more knock down power.

HAHAH! Wait, what? .308 as a plinker? You can reach out and touch someone much further than 400 yards with .308.

.300WINMAG is my fav all time round, so much power but sooooooo expensive and not practical at all, and you'll never need a round that crazy unless you're doing some INSANE shooting... .223 is a good plinking round out to 300-400 yards, .308 will destroy it however.

person stopped, yes. will it stop a decent sized buck at 400 yards, prob not. its a great small animal, person, ect round but like i said before theres better rounds for what i do. for example not many people give the .270 or 7mm any real thought. they shoot flatter, hit harder and easily stop large game. and its roughly the same price per box as .308. i highly suggest reloading your own ammo.that will vastly improve the balistics of the .308. the only ammo i found that shoots consistant is the 60$+ per box federal or semi custom loads. but theres nothing funner than shooting priaire dogs using a .308 w/98gr Vmax. bullets. those little bastards EXPLODE with that combo.
unless i stumble across a deer standing around looking to be made into a steak most my shots are over 400 yards. i took a coyote at a hair under 800yrds last season. 7mm rem mag,129gr hornady customed loaded. now a AR10,thats a fun gun.

For transporting the woman and the 4-year-old. The woman is a new driver, she will be driving this car as well. The Forester is just too small and is not very comfortable as a daily driver in the city -- well, it's fine for me, but not too much fun for the passengers sometimes.
