Pled Guilty to DUI + Killing a Pedestrian is only 30 days in jail?!?

MIAMI (Reuters) - Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth pleaded guilty on Tuesday to manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol and was sentenced to 30 days in jail for the car crash that killed a pedestrian on Miami Beach.

His jail term will be followed by two years of house arrest and eight years probation. A Miami-Dade County judge also ordered the National Football League player to pay $10,000 in fines and perform 1,000 hours of community service.

Blood tests showed Stallworth had a blood alcohol level of 0.126, well above Florida's legal limit of 0.08, when he hit and killed 59-year-old construction worker Mario Reyes on March 14, court documents said.

Stallworth had been drinking at a Miami Beach club before crashing his black Bentley GT coupe into Reyes, who was walking across the MacArthur Causeway after finishing his shift as a crane operator.

Stallworth, 28, had faced up to 15 years in prison but pleaded guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence.

He also reached a confidential civil settlement with Reyes's family, Stallworth's attorney, Chris Lyons, told reporters.

Lyons said Stallworth had accepted full responsibility for his actions.

"He acted like a man, he reported it immediately to the police through 911, he remained at the scene, he co-operated fully with the Miami Beach Police Department," Lyons said.
So if you plead guilty because you killed a pedestrian while DUI you get only 30 days?!

That's REALLY lenient... wow I guess if you're rich like OJ once was, you can get away with anything.

Sounded like he paid off the family pretty well too.

Isn't a "lighter sentence" typically like 75% of the sentence? He got .005% of the 15 year sentence. And $10k fine? Thats pennies for a wide receiver!

Note to self: Become football player, then rob bank.

The difference is that Football players GOT money, they get arrested for doing stupid stuff like dog fighting and shooting themselves and drunk fights (well probably not drunk fights) drunk driving maybe. They won't be pulling off any heists on banks.

It was reported that the one game that Burress was suspended for with the Giants, he lost his pay for that game...

His pay for ONE GAME was 200k+. So yea, 10k is chump change, that's running 5 routes in a game.

Oh... but there's 2 years house arrest there too. So that makes it good

Must have paid the family off good to keep them from screaming at such a ridiculous sentence?

In our materialistic society, money is everything. Look @ Paris Hilton, OJ Simpson (before his stupid robbery), Michael Jackson.

Then look at normal people. The other day some guy was sentenced a good 5yrs+ for killing someone DUI. (the family of the deceased were religious, and said he had enough suffering, so the sentence was shortened.)

You didn't mention the "be an NFL star" part in your title, that pretty much covers it.

Don't forget he didnt flee the scene and the pedestrian was not in a legal crossing. That does factor into the sentence.

Let's not be naive. The reason this went down was probably, DA broke as a joke, and MOST important the family probably ok'ed it with the enormous settlement he gave. I just hope they wait to give the guy his license back, more than 30 days at least.
