you know this isnt even a "OoOooh look commie Kalifornia" law, this is a law EVERYWHERE. Dont think so? Try to threaten to harm or kill someone in public, over the phone or sent in a letter, or impersonate someone else to rip someone off and see what happens! 
Its only because the internet gives people some false sense of anonymity and makes them think they can somehow do **** here they cant do in real life (ahem, stealing music and movies is perfectly fine as long as we do it over the internet!)
The only crazy thing about it is how shocked people seem to be about this even though this is how its been our entire lives! even says right here..
Maybe Im just getting old, but Im starting to realize theres a whole generation of Americans that have grown up now that dont remember a time before the internet and actually have to be reminded that, no, the internet is not the ****ing Matrix, breaking the law is breaking the law and, surprise! youre going to be held accountable.

these issues arent so clear cut, i think some of what you say is true, but oversimplified. this is just an encroachment by the state, no one knows how to solve these issues, but legally the gov needs some more options when pressure needs to be applied.

so is burning a copy of your cd/dvd for a friend also breaking the law (ok maybe)? what about just inviting them over to watch the dvd? what if instead of them coming over you opened up a port in your router/firewall to your local network and you streamed the movie for them to watch? does it matter if you are good friends or just friendly neighbors, or maybe interweb chat buddies, or if you've never spoken at all? does it matter if the movie/cd is streamed or if its cached on a remote hdd for later viewing? even if you plugged all these holes, tech/people will find a thousand new ways around the new regulations.

Sorry, but the only gray area is with people who dont know the law and think they can make some hypothetical situation to justify file sharing. I can pass along some boring legal reads on the matter if your really interested.
