False. It's enforced regularly, at the discretion of the meter douche and if the street has history of complaint. One of my neighbors ratted the whole block with pictures out a couple years ago and each of us got a $160.00 ticket. Now if you're in your driveway you better have clearance behind/in front of car or be on the meter maids good side to not get a ticket. If you're obviously parked like a jackass you're gonna get a $100 ticket.

It's different for any block, just ask a neighbor if the parking person is a pain. It also doesn't help living next to a college like I do. Parking near any school or area of high traffic will def get patrolled more often.

belive it or not my mom and dad got a ticket for parking on a non concrete or dirt patch that is right next to their own drive way. Basicly looking at the house drive way is on the left, to the left of that dirt patch that used to have a tree but has scince been removed and to the left of thata walkway with their lawn. The ***** bag sherrif was going to a house down the street for a complaint and on his way back stopped and gave them a ticket. they just happened to be outside when all the comotion was going on and the cop didnt even give them a chance to move there car, mind you it is there own property that they parked on. They have scince had that dirt covered with concrete due to that ticket. City states that you must park on a covered surface.

From SFMTA website:

Residents can block their own driveways only if the building the driveway serves has two or one units and the vehicle’s license plate is registered to the building’s address. All other types of driveway parking can be cited.

That's retarded. I pass a house everyday that has at least 4 cars parked on the lawn.

illegal because sidewalk is a public right of way; they'll get you for your car being too close to the curb when parked on the street as well...

fwiw, my friend and i were working on our cars in high school and took a lunch break, only to return and see a parking ticket for 4" of his bumper hanging over the sidewalk from my driveway

the reason for the unpaved rule is for ecological reasons. while we own the property above, this law is to help protect the environment and potential pollution to the watertable... from leaking oil, etc from cars dumped/parked for long periods on dirt lots. SF has an exception to the driveway rule because houses are usually not set back too far from the street, so driveways are usually very short so the FD doesn't face the same issues.

the hanging over the driveway or sidewalk are for other reasons, the driveway i heard was for the fire dept. and the sidewalk is for any handicapped that need to use the public sidewalks... the 4" sucks though, but i guess you can also technically get a speeding ticket for 1mph over the limit... the laws are pretty objectively written so there doesn't need to be subjective decisions that need to be made.

Well, that makes sense. It's just a PITA though to park farther away when there's just so much space on the front yard that one can use to park. Oh well...

They can also get you for parking to far from the curb so be carefull. I think the max distance you can be from the curb is like 18 inches.

yup, average is 11 i believe, and too close is something like ~5; they dont want your tire in the drainage path of a curb (to impede drainage) but not beyond the apron of the curb...

i just fought a ticket my dad got for parking 'too close', it said something like 4", but the 'edge of curb' is very loosely defined in street parking law depending on the type of curb (square, rounded, tapered..)
