I can't decide between the two photos of the sidewinder being launched from the F/A-18 will still on deck or the attack sequence shots of the Taliban BMP. I assume the pilot has now retired from the Navy?

i thought nimitz was a class of aircraft carrier. i know the USS abraham lincoln is a nimitz class carrier. bandy, what's the final word?

Usually the lead ship is also the name of the class of ship (in the us navy). So CVN-68 is the USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the Nimitz class of aircraft carriers. There's also the Improved Nimitz class of aircraft carriers, I forget which number they start with.

The plane flying over the lake is the B-1B Lancer strategic bomber. The swing wing, semi-stealth strategic bomber. That may be a real photo, but could also be a painting I've seen.

the nimitz was the FIRST of the series, after the USS ENTERPRISE class, which btw, is the only one in the class... (so it has that distinctive tower or super structure.

the newest in the nimitz class is the USS RONALD REAGAN.

and there you have it folks, the best that america has produced. each carrier is accompanied by it's battle group of various warships consisting of destroyers, cruisers, frigates and a couple los angles class subs.

an assortment of various supply ships might be part of certain deployments, as needed.

so the carrier isnt just a lone ship in the waters.

a carrier battle can go anywhere in the world, deploying the policy of the US within 48-72 (depending where they are) hours.

currently, there are 5 carrier groups within a refueling distance (or less for each aircraft) of bagdad.
