opinions on AVIC D3 or other sat-nav units for <$800?

EDIT: I ended up purchasing a new alpine deck+Sirius hookups and a TomTom 720.

Right now i'm thinking:
a) Pioneer AVIC D3
b) TomTom + some auxiliary Sirius unit
c) a long, boring, late night drive to vegas.
Any suggestions? i'm leaning toward option A since it's 2-in-1 but thought I would ask good'ol BAIC for some input on this.

Thanks.

how well does the flip up screen handle stiff suspension? more importantly, will it cover my vents when it is placed in the lower half of the DIN? This is also one of the deciding factors for me.

i've never been a fan of the way they look, and it seems like the hinge would break.

model #?

it also looks like not many places are selling the N2 or D2, or even the D3.

I just really don't want to drop a grand on the unit alone since I still want to get bluetooth and Sirius modules.

I have a D3 and i hate having to keep the Navi dvd in there at all times. Yes it records your route so you could take out the navi dvd but if you deviate from the route, you need to put your disc back in. Directions aren't the best. I find myself looping around instead of going direct. iPod interface isn't the best i've seen. It's sometimes slow to scroll for an artist. The Bluetooth adapter won't pair up with alot of phones so you should look to see what phones it's compatible with. It didn't work with my Sprint Mogul until I bought a program for it.
Other then that, It's a pretty good unit. Not the best but good. You can customize the lights on the deck to match your car's interior lights.

I would look into the Alpine decks or maybe the new AVIC's that came out.

exactly the kind of info I am looking for. what models would you suggest I look at? there are a ton on Pioneer's website, but have not considered Alpine.

i just picked up a kenwood double-din and the garmin powered navi unit is around 300 bucks shipped on ebay. all-in-all, i will have spent around 550 for a nice deck but older model ddx7015) and nav unit (g510).

the g510 does not uses discs either, if you want to upload new maps in the future, there is an sd slot or something. plus, it's 4.5"x4.5"x1" or something ridiculously small.

kenwood ftw

As a owner of both a D series (D3) and a N Series (N1, N2) I would go with the D3. The flip up is cool until that damn power cable goes south and everything starts acting up. It's a rather simple fix but it is a pain to replace and is known to cause several issues.

Shoot I have a N1 with the issue sitting in a box. I'll have to fix it and sell it for cheap.

But the D3, what I have now in the car, is pretty damn good for the price. I'd recommend that over the N series any day.

I have the D3 and love it - never have a problem with the navi disc because I connect it to my iPod.

that's my thoughts.

I put like 1 cd a month in my deck and its usually when I buy one and want to listen to it right away. All ipod all the way.

You can find the D3's for under $600 pretty easily these days. I'd kind of like to replace my deck/screen set up with one but I might wait til' the new isht comes out and see if I can figure out how to afford it. Been driving around with nothing in my car for over 6 months.

I was trying to buy another d3 this weekend and found out that they've been discontinued.
